Does anyone know where they put the build sheets for Gm wagons from 1971-1976. I know in the Camaro's they where on op of the gas tank, behind the rear seat. I am wanting to try and find mine for my wagon. I have been buying all kinds of original brochures, literature and I waant to be able to display my build sheet with all the other brochures I have been acquiring.

Did you try under the back seat?

This is debated all the time. I'm more familiar with Oldsmobile than the other GM makes, but the general rule is that it could be anywhere. Also, it's pretty much a given, although once in a while someone claims otherwise, that Oldsmobiles assembled at the Lansing plant did not have their build sheets left in the car by specific policy. At the other assembly plants, there was no policy, so sometimes they were left in the car, and other times they weren't.

When people have reported finding them, they've been everywhere. On top of the gas tank, under the carpeting, inside one of the doors, up under the front or rear seat in the springs, even up in the roof behind the headliner.

The first point is that there was never any intention that build sheets be part of the car and part of what the owner gets when he buys it, so there is no guarantee that there is one in any particular car, or, if there is, it will be in any particular location.

Given the above, the second point is that it is silly to tear a car apart looking for it. Are you going to drop a gas tank, pull up the carpet, or tear out a perfectly good headliner just to see if there's a build sheet there? I don't know how it is for your Estate Wagon, for my Custom Cruiser, dropping the gas tank, which is inside the left rear fender, requires removing the left rear shock absorber, disconnecting the brake lines, and dropping the left side of the axle. This is something you can't do easily in your garage no matter how many jackstands you have. When people report finding them, it's because they've disassembled the car partly or fully for some other reason such as to replace the carpet or patch or replace a leaky gas tank.

One place that IS fairly easy to check is under the seats, you don't have to do much disassembly for that, so most people do check that location.

Yes, I checked under the rear seat. I did find the seat tags still under the seat. I am going to try the front seat tonight and in the doors tonight. If they are not there I am going to leave it alone. I don't feel like ripping into it to "possibly" find the build sheet and take the chance of ruining something in the process. However, this car is totally unmolested so "if" it was put in the car, it is still there. Thanks for the advise, will update you if I find it, or don't.

Checked all four doors, under carpet, carpet padding, in rear seat back. Only place I have not checked is the tailgate and the headliner. I refuse to pull down the headliner, its in perfect shape and I don't want to take a chance of making a blemish in it. Might just have to give up on it

Good idea. You're also assuming it's somewhere in the car waiting to be found. But it might not be there at all.
