I've got a pair of Flowmasters that I was considering putting on my '70 Ford wagon (with a 390). I'm really just looking for a muscular sound, so I was thinking duals with these mufflers would work well. However, the car has pretty new single exhaust that's in very good shape. So my question is this: if I want to spend a lot less and not waste this good setup that's already on there, would putting one Flowmaster on the single system give me a nice sound too? I mean, I know it won't be the same as duals, but it's a good compromise for now, right?
I have flowmaster Muffler in a single system at a Grand Cherokee with a 360 egine, it have a very nice sound. Witch number have your Flowmaster Muffler 40 series, 44, 50??? I have a 40serie under the Grand Cherokee. Search youtube flowmaster soundfiles
My opinion...The Flowmaster will sound OK, but if you want to maximize the flow with the single system, use a DynoMax Welded Ultra-flo, a Goerlich Xlerator or any other "straight-through" performance muffler. Use the long body, preferable the same length as the original muffler. It will not sound very loud at idle, but it will really bark when you get on it. I'd sell the Flowmasters and buy one stainless steel muffler.
I'm not sure what model these are. They were thrown in as part of a package deal, but I don't see a model number on them.
upgrade the diameter of your pipes. Stock is probably 2.25" find a pipe guy that can fit a 2.5" over your rear axle. The larger the diameter of the pipe the lower the rumble (think pipe organ here)
Yeah, that makes sense. I know of a good exhaust shop, but I was just thinking of what I could do that wouldn't cost much for now. I may just decide to shell out the money for duals anyway....need to make up my mind.
A '70 390 should have 10 to 1 compression and duals from the factory. Duals alone should help with performance and mileage, even with stock mufflers! Let them ponies breath!!!
I like your way of thinking. I'm realizing that if what I really want is duals, I should just bite the bullet and get duals. Right? Right.
What to do you mean by "should have"? Do you mean that this was stock, or do you mean that in an ideal world that is what the wagon should have been outfitted with? I am pretty sure it wasn't set up for 10:1 compression, if it is then Art is going to want to be very sure he is running the highest octane he can get. For what its worth, consider the carb, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and exhaust as being analagous to the lungs of an athlete. Humans breathe in and out through the same 'holes,' whereas cars breath in through the carburetor and intake manifold, and breathe out through the exhaust manifold and pipes. Breathing is one of the most important things in atheltics, whether it is marathon running or power-lifting. Making sure that air can enter and exit the engine effectively is equally important. If you are going to go to dual exhaust, then you may as well fix the entire set of 'lungs' on your wagon. Upgrade to slightly higher CFM carb (4 barrel 750CFM), go with a dual plane high flow intake manifold, ask your exhaust guy if a set of Torino exhaust headers will fit in your ride (steering box can be a problem), cut out the cats, install a high flow muffler, and get the largest diameter pipes you can fit under your car. Once you have your car breathing right then you can work on the heart (engine -- decide for torque or HP), the hand-eye coordination (steering), balance (suspension), and looks (exterior). Power is the combination of a good heart with good lungs. long post short: get dual exhaust.
Ahhhh...you got them installed, or you decided that's what you're going to do? Did you decide on X or H pipe?
Got it done; picked it up from the shop this afternoon. H pipe, traditional setup with the Flowmasters. Sounds awesome.
Did you want the H pipe or was it recomended? the only reason I ask is because I am thinking of the same for my car. Ive read H pipes done the right way improve scavenging and can improve torque over an xpipe or standard dual pipes. Im glad you got what you wanted!
