Wow, pretty awesome wagon! What did you have to start with? Do you know of a place to get used body panels? I've got a lot of rust to deal with. Thanks for the pics for support.
wagon restoration Well, it started out as a low miles car from OK. It was sitting in a field so guess what. Rusted floor pan because the electic windows were left down. So, only rust in the passenger rear floor pan and drivers floor fan. No other rust but the bumper. Just so happens I bought a rust free bumpers. I had them re-chromed and had the rear quarter on the drivers side replaced, since it had bee crushed. The rest of the car was good without any rust. Rebuilt the engine and trans and then for 50 dollars found a coupe with the famous rear end and had it rebuilt and put it on. Man would that car go. Interior panels were excellent and swapped a red NOS wheel for a green one, boy was I lucky. It had all the options and the auto air was good. Found 3 auto air dashes as I bust 2. One by and earthquake and one by something falling on top of it. The third stayed packed in bubble wrap for 10 years in storage. I finally found NOS spinner hub caps, bought the re-pro bias ply tires from Coker, bought ALL NOS suspension parts. Didnt have to use one single Moog or TRW part anywhere all in GM boxes. Then I found a complete NOS exhaust from y-pipe to tail pipe over the years and NOS shocks front and rear and the seats were never recovered. I found them in a pick your part junk yard for 75.00 with the console. I had my colum rebuilt without the shift lever and detailed every inch. Found NOS carpet not repro. and NOS mats. Used SEM vinyl dye to freshen up the original vinyl with a special gold parchemtn clear top coat and had SMS make me a headliner and then put all NOS parts where needed and had the car painted in acrylic laquer as original. Had all the stainles polised and finished the entire car at about 20k. Took it to auction and it got up to 40k but I didnt sell it as I put a much higher reserve because I didnt want to sell it. Just wanted to see what it would bring. Im sure if I took it to BJ auction it would bring more than that. I love it so much and Its like im driving a brand new car. 32k miles and like a could. The am/fm radio sounds nice but rather have a better system but no where to hide one, so I just enjoy the sound of the car. It took many years to find parts and was a 10 year project. I actually drove it until it was ready for the paint and body shop and then let it sit for 5 years until I was ready to assemble it. Now, its a time capsule. You will be very happy with yours if you can find the parts. This was done while everytime I went to the junk yard in 95-2005 you could find atleast 2-3 at each junk yard. I havent seen one in many many years and IM sure to have the metal fixed will cost bucks plus getting pot metal that is re-chromeable. I wish you all the best. I did the same with my 58 Fleetwood and my 61 Coupe Deville. I started before anyone was really collecting and they were too old to find in the junk yards. I got alot of stuff from Memory Lane here is Southern Cal but they are now out of business after 40 years. I think sometimes it all about being in the right place at the right time. I hope you find a good parts car. All the best to you. I know I wouldnt want to go through it again. Im even having trouble finding parts for the late 70's and early 80's cars Im restoring. At least those are from SOCAl and we dont have any rust.
Found a donor car! Well it's been a while ... 2 years to be exact. In the spring of 2011, I found a 65 Catalina wagon in the desert of California. Grabbed it just before it went to the crusher. I not get it back to Alberta till Oct 2011. I had trouble getting the title for the car (long story...). I will post more pics in the coming weeks but suffice to say .... what a body baby! https://picasaweb.google.com/105908860112140983297/65PontiacCatalinaSafariWagon?authkey=Gv1sRgCOGM-ZTktqWOHA Surface rust in some areas but mostly unmolested! 95,000 miles and I suspect it has been sitting in the desert since late 70's early 80's. Interior not as good as the sheet metal but my interior in my other wagon is in much better shape. I'm currently cleaning out the car interior and I need to prep the surface rust areas before parking it in the yard for the winter. The power window in the tail gate is up 3" so I cannot open the tail gate. I do not have keys for the car. I need to remove the ignition lock cylinder so as to get a key cut so I can turn the key to accessory and put up the window. I found out how to remove the ignition cylinder. You put the key in and turn to the left, insert paper clip into small hole, push in and cylinder lock pops out. The only trouble is I do not have a key. I tried the key from my other wagon and also a blank key and tried to force it into acc and it will not move. I got the glove box door lock cylinder out and took it to the locksmith. He cannot cut a full ignition key from this cylinder. Door locks are the same problem. In 1965, Pontiac did not have key codes so my PHS docs did not have any info in that regard. So...does anyone have any experience in removing the ignition lock cylinder when you do not have the key? Thanks in advance of any help you can provide me... Brian
