-------Back in "the good ole days" you could buy only the inner cable. Today, in the not so good ole days, you are lucky to find the complete unit as you bought for your car.
Guess I'm showing my age....I didn't know that. I have never bought anything but the inner cable. Been awhile, though.
---------Age is but a number. With newer cars having electric speedos hw many years longer will cable sets be available? As I sit here in my speedo bouncing, I ponder that!
---------Ha! You found a speedo or a speedometer cable. You'd look good wearing a speedo while installing a new speedometer cable..Just guessing!
If you have cruise controll and the transducer located on the left inner wheelhouse that could be the cause. Most of the Gm cars of that era had the inner cable that only could be pulled out from the top not the trans side. When the cruise transducer went bad it snaped the drive cable end. There was a repair kit for the cable. Some if not all cables are still available from the parts houses.I still have a tube of GM speedo cable lube.
No speedo for me. It would be hard for the ladies to stop looking at me. And pointing........ Took the wagon out for a 70 mile ride yesterday. The speed got better when warmed up. I think I might be able to lube it and go. I got some of the graphite lube. Gonna try her soon.
A quick Google found this;http://www.classicindustries.com/truck/parts/g8103.html These used to available from my local parts house for a couple bucks and I suspect aren't too much more today when bought right. Delco made them, probably still do just a matter of finding a parts counterman with grey hair.
--------CounterMAN? Grey hair? In these parts the counter PERSONS are what appears to be 16 year old girls who don't seem to know what a car is! And are too busy combing their hair and puttin on makeup to look anything up on the computer. Heaven forbid if that computer goes offline!-----------Ask for a left handed carburator gasket and they ask "What color is your 1946 X-mobile and how many doors does it have?"
