Picking up a car soon and will be driving it about 2,000 miles. I'm bringing my tools and would like a list of spare parts I should bring. It's a '71 in original condition, recent plugs/wires/points/cap/rotor My list so far: -Fuel Filter -Fuel Pump -Belts Possibly electronic ignition conversion kit.. thoughts on that?
hoses not parts - good walking shoes water oil transmission fluid fix a flat brake fluid beer maybe a cell phone
Points would be easier.. If you take the conversion, I'd do it first before I left town for home. A couple spark plugs Fuel hose Vac hose JB Weld (1 hr stuff) Buy some water/oil while you are there and maybe a couple gallons of gas in a jug. For that kind of unknown I'd load up on water. If you have an issue, expect to need to completely re-fill the radiator. Sunscreen
Thanks I'll be near and on highways so not too worried.. civilization will always be near LOL Will be interesting.. taking a chance but kinda excited about it
What is it? If it runs with new points, I wouldn't worry about the electronic dist. conversion right now. Check all the safety stuff. Tires good, not dry-rotted /cracked? Be prepared (just in case) to delay your trip home by a day or two in case you need some work done. Might be a good idea to scope out a good independent mechanic shop and a tire shop ahead of time in case you need some help. When you check it out, do a good, thorough test drive - for like about 1/2 an hour. This will give you time to get more familiar with the wagon and get it up to operating temperature where you can see if it is overheating, leaking, etc. Don't forget tools!
Several years ago there were 4 guys in my neighborhood who all had 55-56-57 Chevys. When we traveled to out of town shows we had a big wooden box full of everything part we thought we might need in case of break down. We occasionally had a breakdown on the road. NEVER was it one of the parts we thought we needed in advance and had packed in the box.
Duct tape... always... bailing wire too. ( may need to tie down a hood, tire shut a door, tie up a tail pipe... extra hose clamps...(?) as mentioned, tools.
Gorilla tape, flashlight, pb(penetrating blast) spray booster pack socket set screwdrivers and assortment of hose clamps, carb cleaner If driving at night bring a spare headlight bulb and a couple of taillight bulbs spare fuses
"a 1971 ??"....yeah, what is it??? Mopar... Bring Starters, lots of them. Chevy..... Power stearing pumps, water pumps, windshield washer motors, as many door handles as you can afford.. Ford.... ???, don't know, had many a Ford and was never left stranded., sooo...gas $
Thanks for the ideas. Already planned on bringing my tools and will throw together a little box o stuff. After reading up on headaches setting up the electronic kits I may have to wait.. was kind of hoping for some gas savings though It's a 1971 Ford Galaxie that I found on here when I joined up
