I just picked up two new side mirrors for the 1967 Galaxie wagon from Dearborn classics. It included new gaskets but they are much thicker and shaped different from the original thin flat gaskets. One side has a convex shape to it and the other side is flat with a lip around the edge. I am assuming the flat side with lip goes toward the mirror and the convex side goes toward the car, but I am not sure. Here are some pictures. Convex side of gasket Flat side with lip edge.. I think this is the way it goes on the car Let me know what you guys think PS I liked the original Ford gaskets better!
Any Ford part #'s on the gasket and mirror? Or maybe in the Dearborn catalog Saying this part (mirror) replaces PN ____-___ ? I figure after getting this far with your wagon you have familiarity with the Ford part numbering system. And just thinking that over the years as Ford updated/improved existing parts, the part number changes somewhat to reflect that. So, if you could compare the original Ford PN for the gasket to the Ford PN for this gasket, might see that the # is simlar but slightly different, which can mean it was a revision to an existing part, and works on older stuff (mirrors in your cASE) as well. Just a thought, and could be out in left field with it.
I think you misread what I am asking. Dearborn makes these mirrors and gaskets aftermarket to replace the Ford OEM equipment. The gasket is built different from the original and it does not seal against the door very well reguardless of which way I put it on. I can see light thru the gaps. I am not concerned about the part number, I am concerned about how poorly the gasket seals and which way it is supposed to go on the door.
What I was trying to say, was that this gasket is likely based on a Ford design. Obviously not the same as on your 67, but that perhaps Ford updated to a newer style gasket to use on the same mirror. I was just guessing on that. Or maybe Dearborn just found some plastic gasket somewhere that looks the part but doesn't fit very well. Anyhow, have you tried some of the other suppliers? Here is a link to Carpenter's galaxie page with mirrors. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~partsort That didn't work, so you can try this and type in what you want. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?userwatch~dynamicSearchPage~cadefffO Also, Carpenter's also has plenty of NOS and used parts. You could call or email and see if the have something more to your liking. Good luck with it.
The ridge usually goes up and around the mirror's perimeter like the roofrack legs and antenna gasket. Supposed to keep the water from corroding the inside bits and surface of the mirror, given that the paint is intact. You could use a black seam sealant on the bottom face, if you think you'll be changing it, to keep the dust from getting beneath the gasket. FWIW.
