I know some of you guys do not consider OLD Suburbans, TravelAlls, and Grand Wagoneers as station wagons...but...

I just bought a 1971 IH TravelAll 4x2 this weekend, and am picking it up Monday the 18th. I think that back when these were new, most people considered them LARGE wagons. The term "SUV" wouldn't show up for another 20 or so years. What's really cool about this beast is the powerplant...it has a 6.354 Perkins inline Six Diesel and a 5-speed OD manual transmission! This was converted by an engineer in 1980. IH actually offered a Perkins conversion kit to dealers and owners of TravelAlls and pickups from roughly 1971 through 1974 or so.

Power steering and brakes, cold air, vintage AM/FM/cassette (it'll go first!), new tires, an impressive phalanx of gauges, dual tanks, luggage roof rack, room for six easily, and a lay-flat rear seat that makes a true flat 4x8 cargo area for plywood. Didn't Toyota and Chrysler make a huge deal about having that in their early 2000's advertising for their minivans??? What's old is new again!

    And, it has woodgrain sides!

I'll post pics of it this week once I get it home from Texas. Should be fun!:29:

I'll answer my own question...yep, I have a wagon! Now, I'm gonna have to find a vintage Airstream, Avion, or Silver Streak to pull with it.

Yeah, you got a wagon IMO

I've allways thought of the Burbs/Intershashables as wagons...just look at wagon history. Congrats, I really do like IHC and am looking foreward to seeing yours.

I love it! Internationals weren't on my radar until I stumbled upon that IH Metro I bought a couple years ago. I've since sold it but really miss it. If you haven't already, make sure you check out www.binderplanet.com. It's probably the best IH site.

What this really needs is - an Airstream hung off the back

I really enjoy these wagons. I remember them all over the prairies, they were/are so practical for large families, and any one towing anything like a horse trailer, a car trailer, or - my fave, that Silver bullet.

    Congratulations.

She's home! I went to Fort Worth, TX to meet with the seller, completed the deal, and drove it home. Got 22.7 mpg with this beast coming home on I-35! Yeah, really! It kept right along with traffic all doing 70-75 mph. With the .75 OD ratio and 4.10 gears, an effective 3.07 overall gear ratio, the Perkins Diesel engine, and a tailwind helped things right along! :D

It has the aerodynamics of a BarcaLounger, but that's OK with me. It will never, ever break 0-60 speed records. The cops don't give it a second glance. Soccer moms are jealous. Old dudes look wantingly and remember these from back in the day. Plus, I am actually looking for an Argosy, Airstream, Avion, or Silver Streak to haul with this.(y)

Oh, and you bet your a$$ it's a wagon! You can haul 4x8 plywood in this, due to the true fold-flat seat (YEARS ahead of Toyota and Chrysler minivans!), the kids, dogs, fishing and/or hunting stuff, or thirteen people to the drive-in movie...a school bus is for kids only! Lousy analogy there on the bus, BTW!:jumping:
