Hi I have a 68 Country Squire that I am concidering redoing. I was going to run dual ehaust with glasspack out the back. After reading some other postes I have found that it is not a good idea to run them out under the bumper. Now that has put a big damper on my plans. My question is do you still get the fumes with the rear windows up? Has anyone run them on a 45 to the corners of the bumpers? and if so what about the fume issue? While working on the car today I found some more rot in the rear body. Now I am just considering parting it out. HMMMMMMM

Every wagon is shaped different and I have no experience with your wagon but I learned many years ago to keep fumes out of the back on a 80 Colony with dual exhaust it's best to keep the tail pipes in the stock location rather than how it looks if your gona drive with the tailgate window down.

I felt the same as you when I built my 88 Electra wagon with the 455 engine. SOoooo.....I went ahead and ran them straight out the back. Here's the honest truth....fumes poured in the car when ANY window was open. It was horrific.
They were straight throughs and a GM B body. YMMV.

On both my Ford wagons, they are at a 90 degree angle, just the way they would have been from the factory. When I first got my 73 Ford the previous owner had put Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. Keep in mind that any "loud" mufflers will "drone" through the metal cargo floor, plus the back of the car is like a cave. I removed the Flowmasters and had some "stock" mufflers installed. The wagon was still too loud for my taste,I went back to the muffler shop and they installed 2 glasspacks "backwards" for resonators and did a crossover pipe. That quieted the car to a very acceptable level that still sounds good at idle.but doesn't drone at highway speed. My 85 Country squire has factory dual exhaust and it's pretty quiet also.

I have flowmaster duals run to the back axle into dumps. I have never had fume problems, but then again I don't sit in the back. I don't have bad drone....IMO, but I have also had some loud cars lol

I am sure once I add the longtubes and switch to 2.5 pipes that it will get a little loud, but oh well. That is what a killer stereo is for lol

Yeah, I agree. If you use the rear windows, you might want them to dump out of the sides. The Bernoulli principal is pulling exhaust in the car.!!

If it were ME. I would split it in two. and just after the rear door, I would make a turn out and down. That way I would save the cost of tailpipes, and if it sounded good and was not too bad on the fuel economy I could keep it that way. Then if it was bad I could get tail pipes and pick where they would come out based on earlier test of behind door.

Plus it would look period correct for a 68.

I have the Thrush Welded mufflers. I LOVE them. I had flow masters on the Tempest, but they were dead. Bought the Thrush and they sound great and are a 3rd of the price.

I had turndowns in the Tempest, the problem was that they were right under the seat. So you had to scream to hear anyone. So I added tailpipes.

    Thrush sounds

In car sounds. Just watch the first 30 seconds. I drove all around the block!! They sound mean in the car!!!

    Hope this helps,

Hi tempest I have the thrush welded on my 72 thunderbird with a stock 429 and I totally agree they sound great. on the bird they are run to the axle with tun downs and out alittle. planning on getting tails put on this year. as far as the wagon goes i am considering the same mufflers. bringing the tails out just at the corners of the bumpers on a slight angle and turn downs. figuar if i have to change them it wont be that hard or expensive.

They have to go out the sides for ground clearance in a lot of cases too.
You could put on a pair of truck smokestacks if you don't like the pipes coming out the sides?:)
It's a Ford so you have to keep the fumes away even more than any other brand car because of all the rust holes that allow fume ingress.:D
My car has new springs and sits at stock height and would crush or drag tailpipes sticking out the back if I pulled out of a driveway with a steep angle, gets real close to the bumper and spare tire well as it is.
A lowrider or one sitting lower because of worn springs would really drag, does make for a cool lightshow at night with all the sparks.
Get some studded snow tires and burn out at the same time and it would be the ultimate.
Hmmm... this is actually starting to sound like a real good idea, if I must say so myself.
I found out about the open tailgate window and what comes in when I had my rear and driver's windows open and an unfortunate bird flew under my car and met it's demise.:(
The down feathers came in the back and were pulled all the way up to the front of the car and were floating all over the place inside.

B.V., On the Batwagon I used Jack Roushez reverse flow S.S. Megaflows that he INSTALLED on hiz 5.0L 'Stang go-fasterz that do a 45* to the rear in front of the drive tirez. No fumez at all but with the side glass down the original AM, the XM, and the AM/FM C.D. CASSETTE ARE WORTHLESS BUT WORTH IT. That strong 440 JUST SINGZ:evilsmile: BTW, It's 2 1/2"s X2 ALL THE WAY BACK AND CALIFORNIA SAYZ THOW SHALL NOT RUN 'UM HERE:tiphat:

LMaO !!!! Feather and a light show thats sounds cool to me!!!
well ground clearence isnt a problem on this old girl. I am going to lower the car about 1 to 1.5 inch rear and 1.5 to 2 in the front. I am running the pipes to the corners on an angle to exit just in front of the bumper. If i get bad fumes i will onle have to redo about 2 feet of pipe a side. I use to have a bronco and so did a few of my friends and I remember that my one buddy had his out the back and the truck always had fumes. Myother bud had them exiting at the corners under the bumper and never had a problem. Me I had dumps and noise and minor fumes LOL. Gonna try it in the spring and see what I get.
ASHES TO ASHES DUST TO DUST if it wasnt for CHEVYS our TOOLS WOULD RUST!!!

    Dual exhaust

On my '65 Falcon wagon I ran the Thrush Turbo's with the tail pipes turned down at the rear corners. I didn't have any exhaust fume problem, and the sound of the Thrush Turbo's was great.

Of course the mildly warmed over 302 gave the exhaust out the back the good '60's mild rumble @ idle and a nice bark on acceleration. :2_thumbs_up_-_anima
