i've never been so disgusted by an naias show in my life!!! tiny lil' euro cars are the "in" thing now i guess! and thanks to cafe standards...every damn thing is an underpowered 4 cyl! take for instance....the chevy cruze...138 hp from a TURBO 4!!! c'mon my '02 focus made 160 without a turbo!
Yeah....I agree, Ian. We are dinosaurs...even a young guy like you. We are being steered like cattle. I mean, hey....the Chevy Volt is car of the YEAR????? I don't THINK so!
Yeah, I know.... But it's not the hp that's supposed to be impressive, it's the gas mileage - supposed to near 40 mpg. That 138hp motor is only 1.4 liters.
Well....if it's gas mileage that is the important thing....let's make the President and ALL the politicians drive one themselves! No more drivers for them and NO more limos to go to lunch in!
I pretty much gave up on cars in 1974, when the goverment regulations and insurance beat the best cars ever made out of existance. Without a doubt there are cars, made after that, that I like or would own, but I could make a list on 1 sheet of paper. For me the kind of car I like is V-8 powered, never have had anything else, never will. I prefer full to intermediate size, based on 1960's sizes, not todays, I like power conviences, and compfort, not into Hi-Tech or mandated safty crap. Most of all I like to work on it myself. And as far as gas milage, who cares!! That would be the last thing I would check in buying a car. I used to like SUV's (Ramchargers) and I've watched Ford ruin the Explorer with the 11, and Dodge make the best ever Durango, then you look on review coments and people say, "dismal milage" again, who cares if you have 390 HP in a nice looking ride. I am the last of the breed, I think. Thank God I have my wagon, never will they make them like that again. MPJ
i seriously wanna cry here... i figured we were still a few years off from having to buy a euro-weenie-mobile here. (no offense to our european members here) American roads are suited to bigger cars like ours! we have the room...so spread'em out! i loved the fact that on the highway.. after i set the cruise i can fold up the arm rest, and throw a leg up on the passenger seat! i always wondered what the 4.5l powerstroke v6 diesel would do in a crown vic?
I wonder what real world MPG will be with a turbo 1.4 and how long those turbos will last without requiring major repairs.
i dont know steph...its like we are suppose to be impressed with these number that these engines put out! buick was shouting "it does 0-60 in 8.0 seconds" impressive...my 2 ton ..mostly stock wagon will do it in 7.0....my moms previous 1998 regal (3.8 s/c) would do it in 6.0! and the mpg's that these things get are the same as the gen2 3.8l v6 got in the regal and grand prix. all your telling me is that you are overtaxing some glorified lawnmower engine! i hate the environmentalists...they are responsible for this! they tell us we shouldnt want to drive. ....well .. its working with these things! gimme a new taurus with that nice twin turbo v6!
There are still some nice cars out there. I have a 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon on order with a 6 spd manual trans, 550 hp, and Recaro seats. Here's the problem and it will only get worse. You can thank a Democratic Congress and a Democrat President that speeded up. The new CAFE legislation closed two big loophole. One loophole being the SUVs. SUVs were brought into the system. The other loophole and the most important one is that CAFE will be computed on sales. Under the old system if Chevy had 7 models that fell under CAFE you added up the EPA mileage stats divided by 7 and you got the CAFE. It did not matter if most of the sales were the larger cars. Now CAFE is computed by total sales and if a manufacture misses the target it gets a hefty fine. Sure they can offer a big car, but in order to sell it they better sell 3 micro-cars to offset it. Manufactures are going to have to pay very close attention to sales to see that they do not miss the CAFE target. People will not like the cars that will have to produced to meet the target. Top that off with not being able buy a big car because not enough small cars have been sold or very limited numbers of big cars being produced and people are going to get hot.
and that is the problem with the world today....people bought the global warming hype. we have now outlawed a gas that every living creature on earth expels....and every plant takes in! now....this giant scam keeps those of us whom havent been bamboozled from living our lives as we see fit. it used to be, people to the automaker: "this is what we want...this is what we like" automaker to the people: "then that is what we shall build" now people to the automaker: "this is what we want....this is what we like" Gov. to the automaker: "this is what your going to build" automaker to the people: "this is what we have to build...and your gonna like it!" " its slower, smaller, very "uncomfortable and not as safe...but its better than what you wanted...trust us!"
A1Awind, you nailed it, with the rediculous new CAFE standards the automakers will have to make cars we (or at least I ) do not want. I remember back to 1987-my dream car a 1969 Charger was just not good for a daily driver, my Dad offered to help, and give me a downpayment for a new car. Being a Chrysler man (me) I went to my local dealership, this was when the K car was the basis of almost everything Chrysler made (not bad mind you) but I still wanted a V-8 ect, ect. I looked at the beautiful Chrysler New Yorker 4th Aves, nice, but not what a 20 year old guy drives. I ended up buying a Ramcharger, and repalced that with another Ramcharger. Story leading to my switch to trucks instead of cars, because they were closer to what I wanted. MPJ
