Absolutely, they still have it. My dad used to use it all the time. It's called the Autotrain but doesn't go any further north than somewhere in Virginia. Apparently there's a bridge that's too low and it can't make it under. Dad used to love it; said it was the best way to get you and your car to Florida.
The Auto Train stops in Lorton, Virginia, in the southern suburbs of Washington, D.C. Driving to Orlando from DC is about a 13 hour drive. The cost of the auto train these days is probably too high to make it worth not driving. Years ago a friend checked into it for his Toyota and a family of four and got sticker shock. Ended up driving his Expedition to Florida instead. Maybe its not so bad if its just one person and the car. I don't know anyone who has ever taken the Auto Train and while I live not far from Lorton, most of my family lives at the other end near Orlando. I've considered checking the price for taking a car on the Auto Train to attend a Florida car show like Turkey Rod Run or the Mopar show at the Don Gartlits Museum. One of these days I'll have to do a price check.
We take Amtrak every time we go to NYC or Washington, DC. This July, we went from Huntington, WV to Washington DC for $218 round trip and that was for both of us. The trip was much more relaxed and the scenery was beautiful.
riding the train lets you see the cool cars that people store at the back of their property(next to the traintracks). take a camera that can quickly snap clear pics or video and make note of gps/towns/landmarks for each car. there will be many and you wont be able to remember the details. each car you mention to grandmma might strl funny stories she may have about when the cars were fresh.
I understand not liking the stupid security, but I am 6'4 about 240, so sometimes that long drive, or sitting contained for that long is hell on me! Plus ya get an extra day or two at the beach
Just tell her to leave her guns and knives at home!~ She doesn't have to be pistol-packing mama all the time!!
