My grandmother wants to take the train from Indiana to the Fla line to visit her son. Since she hates going alone, I'll be riding with her. I had a thought that if I could find a cheap wagon nearby, I'd drive it back.

That's a good idea, DR. Look for cars in towns all along the train route that are south of the salt belt. You can always hop another train if you don't like the car.

I'm jealous DR. Amtrak does a heck of a job on passenger trains. You can buy the berths for a lot less from the conductor too. Great food, excellent service.

Have a good trip. Hope you find a decent ride too. (y)

As long as you attempt to get some Bikini pics while there!

How much was the train trip, and how long is the train ride? I have always wanted to do that!

    EDIT: Nevermind......36hrs, I would drive!

In 1985, from Seattle to LA, it was $85 coach, $200 with the Berth at the Seattle station, Return. $55 for the berth from the conductor including meals. Beer and Wine Extra. Great scenery through the mountains. Even saw the Navy graveyard in San Luis Obisbo.

I'm guessing you could just about add a zero to the prices you paid years ago. My uncle who won't fly, took a train from Washington DC to Portland, Oregon a couple years ago and the round trip price was about $1500.00. Almost 5 times the price of a round trip plane ticket.

Trains are awesome! I wonder if the train still runs from the NE to Fla with the capability of taking your own car on same train...the snowbird special?

I've bought more cars during trips and vacations than my wife will admit. One time, we were on a camping trip in GA and ended up bringing back a 1970 Skylark Sport. My wife says, "can't we go anywhere without you looking at a car?" I say, "No."
As far as taking the train, it's around $225 for each of us round trip. te only thing atout flying is, she hates all the security you have to go through just to get on the plane. Our backup plan is me driving her to GA. If she can handle riding in my truck, I can tow a car back. I'm trying to sell some extra parts to make some cash.
