How to spot the difference between chevy 305 and olds 307?

    Well, as above actually. I might be going for a 80's caprice and they were delivered with both engines. Not much power from any of them, but the Chevy can be build a bit better by letting it breath, so I am looking from hinds to tell them apart easily (from pics etc).

    8th digit of VIN LV2 307 "Y" LG4 305 "H" LM1 350 "L" If you know Chevy engines by site, you'll have no trouble telling. The Olds looks completely different. First obvious thing I guess would be the oil filler tube front of the engine near center. SBC fill on the valve cover.

    The Olds 307 has an oil filler tube that sticks up from a small "shelf" on the block directly above the water pump. The valve covers have five bolts (two on top, three on the bottom). The Chevy 305 has an oil fill cap on one valve cover and the covers only have four bolts.
