Here in Canada, one Province (Quebec) is going to make it Law to have them on. The trouble is most apartment dwellers don't have room to store the Summer tires, but who would expect a well-thought out law from Grandstanding Politicians?

Anyway, I went searching Google Canada ('google.ca') for (Best "Snow Tire"). I got motherhoods on our DOT, but no brands or types. But I did get a decent, current article from February 16, 2008, with a very good clarification of what Snow Tires and Winter Tires are and what each major brand offers. They are different, so its worth reading:

My baby will get new 'booties', probably the Michelin X-Ice tires for our highways and streets.

Our CBC also had an archive of Winter Tire articles, mostly discussing Studded tires, from 1998. What is good about it is that it discussed how some Canadian regions use or don't use them.

So I guess "all season" tires are out then!

See what happens when you live in a socialist country! Kidding

I would go with the Michelins any day. I've never had a problem with them & that's the only tire I'll ever buy. You can probably get good deals on them now that the season is almost over too, thank gawd!

I'm with you on the Michelins. The Donor got new all-seasons 3 months before I stripped it down, and I installed new all-seasons 1 month before I blew the motor. So I've got 10 new all seasons for a few years. I'll strip off the Donor tires and get new Michelin X-Ice next fall. Too many folks drive like they came from a Mexican Vacation. If I can stop and steer, I don't give a rat's a$$ what others do. Been driving in this stuff for 40 years without an accident, but I don't trust those pregnant airbag skates.

    I'm with you Stormin!

I can't stand driving in the snow anymore not because of me, because of the other drivers!

I used to come home absolutely frazzled when I used to drive my limo around the Washington, DC area in the snow.

Now, I just stay home when it snows if it ever does, rare here! Plus, I don't want salt on any of my vehicles too.

Back in the good old days, Ford ran a Skid School near Toronto (Oakville). I took the course to get a 10% discount on my car insurance. Here, in the Prairies they give one too, and the insurance drops too. Best darn thing to learn about your vehicle's capability and handling the unpredictable. It's real snow and ice with cardboard cars on either side, kids dodging out from between parked cars. Other kids playing street hockey. A mom pushing a buggy into an intersection, etc. Worth every penny. The winter tires put more odds on your side. :D

Many tire shops will store your summer or winter tires for you for free, so you dont have to worry about a storage place.

I have had several different sets of snow/winter tires on my cars over the years and IMHO, the best winter tires on the market are the Micheline X-Ice and Bridgestone Blizzak.

I even tried studded tires and they worked very well on ice, but had poor traction on the dry pavement. This was due to the fact that I selected low end tires and had the tire shop stud the tire. If I were to get studded tires again, I would get the pre studded Nokian Hakkapeliitta. Someone I worked with had them and they worked very well.

One thing to take into consideration with studded tires is that not all states/provinces allow them, and some only allow them during the winter months. Here is a list of which states/provinces allow studded tires.

No storage, here. But I've got room.

We aren't allowed Studs here. Something about the type of soft limestone in the mixture... It was changed last fall.

I've heard that Blizzacks are the best. I'm not sure who makes them.

Yeah, they seem to be well regarded. I bought a set of Michelins in Mexico, preparing for the move back to Canada in June 1999. 7 year guarantee. They were well worn by the time I got new ones in 2006, 7 years later. Never had a flat, bad steering, noise. Good tires. I'll stay with them. :)
