We've got a 91 Cutlass Cruiser at work (sort've the backup to the backup to the backup vehicle), and it's a damnfine car. I mean it was before we beat the sheeit out of it. Big enough to be useful but not at all intimidating... 3rd row is fine for kids... they look pretty classy... pretty zippy for a 4-cylinder. I'd still lean towards a Volvo if you can get one it great condition, but a late 80s/early 90s Chevy Celebrity/Olds Cutlass Cruiser/Buick Century wagon sounds perfect for you.

    big, no.....clunky, yes..lol.

( i jest out of love stick....im probably the only one on the forum to have seen your wagon in person... and its awsome)

faith, if you think that your vanagon is big...then this would be way too big. there were two oldsmobile wagons in the 80's both are cruisers. (try to stay with me here) in the early 80's the CUTLASS cruiser was a small to medium wagon that was rear wheel drive, (that is what teddy has).
the CUSTOM cruiser was the full size wagon pictured above.

the smaller CUTLASS cruiser, (which later was called the cutlass ciera wagon) has a 3rd row and may be small enough for you to handle comfortably.
in 1986 the CUTLASS cruiser became a front wheel drive v6 or 4 cyl only car.. and a little smaller. but they had very reliable engines, and 3 rows.

now remember, cars that you find on the road today are taller and that gives an impression of shorter length, this is not the case. the seating position is higher. the older cars arent any longer, just lower giving the impression of added lenght.

    ....hope i helped

Did the 80's Cutlass Cruisers RWD come with a third seat?? :hmmm:

5 kids to haul, you do need a third seat for sure. In my honest opinion, you seem pritty firm that you don't ant a full size wagon so I think you may just have to go with what you need not what you want....you need a mini van IMO. Try test driving a Chev Astro/GMC Saffari mini van. Shorter than that VW you have and seating for 8 plus cargo room, RWD and it sits on a real full frame. We have one, had it for 11 years and will drive it for another 11.

well i went to look at an 88 volvo 240 wagon with a third row rear facing and its perfect! i most likely wont have all the kids in this car often, so i dont need a mini van, and i really am not a mini van person! my hubby checked it out and it looked pretty good, but the lady that is selling it is going to get it smogged and call us. so hopefully it works out! im excited!

thanks : ) the vw is just a totally different machine too. the stick is huge and is hard to shift, and the car is so heavy, not to mention trying to turn the wheel! its work, for sure. i will look around for those you mentioned, thanks!

Well, perhaps the older worn parts have been replaced by now. Parts are expensive for those but the old 240 wagons were good cars. They seemed to go south around 180K to 200K miles with parts problems from simple wear. But, again, the owners may have been vigilant and kept the car up over the years. For most any car, over 200K is a lot of miles but some models will reach 300K or more if well serviced. If you purchase this wagon I wish you luck and many happy miles.(y)
