I'll tell ya, if my finances keep going south, I may be living in my Fairmont wagon soon.
As it is, I may be moving out of Michigan after Christmas. My wife got cut to part time, and I'm only working 2 days a week. We just can't do it on that kind of income. We'll know by Christmas if they're going to lay my wife off permanently. She's in the medical field!!!!! Can you believe that?
On the positive side, I have a relative in east central Indiana that will give me her house, as long as I let her live there with us. I have no job prospects yet, but I'm working on that.
And I'm still going to keep the wagon. if the Blazer gets repo'd, the wagon will become my DD for a while. Good thing I didn't pull that 4-cyl out yet.

Man....I'm really sorry to hear this, DrgRacr. I hate these financial times we are living in right now. There are people all over hurting like hell. I'm amazed that your wife has been cut back....I thought the med field was pretty secure. The house in IN sounds like a deal but there are always drawbacks to consider. Anyway...I am hoping beyond hope that SOMETHING will turn for you to help you get back on your feet. Please...keep us posted. I am SO sorry to hear that one of our own is struggling in these times. If you need anything...just ask. If I can provide it it's yours. I mean it. Just ask. Good luck, my friend. And DO keep us updated.

Indiana? Isn't that IH country? They still make farm and industrial equipment, don't they? I ran a plant that made chrome mirrors and IH nameplates years ago, in Eastern Canada. Some good companies there making equipment for our Canadian Oil Patch and farmers and they're busy.

Been there, done that. Don't want to do it again.

I feel for you. I'm not too far behind you. I still don't have steady work and my reserve funds run out this month.

    Good luck and best wishes.

Don't give up, drgrcr. We'll get though these times; we've been there before and come out the other end still alive, and I believe that'll happen again. I've had to cut way back from the luxuries I used to take for granted; it'll make me appreciate them more when I can afford them again.
No matter how bad it gets, selling the Fairmont IS NOT AN OPTION!!! That's probably helping you stay sane.
    Good luck.

In the same vein, back in '83, I shared an apartment with a jerk roommate to whom I paid my 1/2 of the rent every month. Turned out he was using it to buy drugs instead of paying the rent, so I came home one day to find an eviction notice on our door. I couldn't bring myself to tell my parents and go back to them with my tail between my legs, so I wound up sleeping in my Mustang GT company car in a rest area on the Garden State Parkway. That went on for about a week before my mom figured it all out and insisted I come back and live with them until I could find a place. Thank goodness for parents, right?!!

Aren't there a bunch of government-backed funds to help a guy start a small business? That would buy you some time and maybe turn this rig-a-ma-jig around, huh?

    SBA or State programs?

What kind of business could I start? Let's see, I have backgrounds in auto repair, medical laboratory, auto parts sales, gun sales, drag racing, truck driving and I'm currently a police officer. My wife is a Lab Technician, and a seamstress.
    I'm sure there's a grant in there somewhere!! ;)
I refuse to give up. Giving up is admitting defeat, and this soldier never admits defeat!!!!!

I'll tell you onething my dad and I talked about doing. We wanted to open an indoor shooting range. My dad drew up plans for a nice setup, including air evacuation and lead containment. the problem was lack of funding. I wonder if today's liberal anti-gun gov't would even consider that?

Yeah....you're dreaming if you are thinking that this administration would fly for a grant on something like that. OTOH, they ARE giving a slew of money away for things that are surprising.

I'm sorry to hear about that Drg Racr. I graduated from a state college here in IL in May 2008, still can not find a job. I work part time for Auto Zone, I'm lucky to even have that. I used to work about 25-30 hrs a week when I started, now its become about 10-12 hrs a week.

When I talk to customers, lately I have been dealing with people that never worked on their own cars, they are trying to save as much as they can by working on their cars. Some people I have spoken to, have been working with companies for 15-30 years, and just like that, they are "let go".

I had been a Volvo tech from 1998-2004, even finding a mechanics job has become tough. I had even tried a few shops, but since I don't have the experiance in Asian cars, they have no interiest in me.

Good luck with everything on your side. God knows, WE ALL NEED IT.
