Looking at a Pontiac Wagon,What should I offer?

    Chrriff...you are a true car guy, wagon lover and a man after my own heart. I find myself liking the unusual stuff too. There is nothing like the feeling of finding an old wagon that lights you up inside, the joy when purchasing it, the love of resurrecting it, the feeling of pride every time you open the door and get in it and the glow it gives you every time you turn the key and hear it rumble in thanks. When you save a car like this Poncho it becomes your friend for life and a warrior that will always respond with gusto. Good luck in your purchase today.
    THERAGE...regarding your negativity...it would appear to me that you have never experienced that special, knowing smile and glint in the eye when walking up to an old car that speaks of warm memories. For that, I can only feel pity for you. Those warm memories don't come from Detroit. They come from the heart. This Poncho spoke to chrriff and he is responding. To chrriff, and to me and others here that understand, your words of negativity are mere dust in the wind.

    THERAGE, for a new guy, you are very overly opinionated and lost what little respect you could have earned in your first 4 posts.

    I am a GM nut, I have owned many of the "73-80 Junk" you do nothing but complain about and they are some of the most dependable and easiest vehicle to keep maintained! I was a FORD Mechanic for 6 years then went to manage an Oil and tire shop. So for you to come blabbing about daddy's bad luck with a few different vehicles he has owned is just crazy, I have some horror stories about the junk I have worked on that will put your panties in a twist. You might like the 50-60's stuff and that is all fine and dandy, I honestly do not care for stuff that old, only a few cars from that era catch my fancy enuff for me to even stop and look at when I am wandering a car show. Most the time I walk on by looking for the late 70's and up "JUNK".

    So with your 4 posts, you have already shown you have nothing but negative comments to offer and what a way to make an impression on a forum where we all respect each other and have become a pretty tight knit family. You remind me of my Ex-MIL. AND for the record, TODAY is the era of declining automobiles, from their lack of class to their lack of user friendliness!


    Now Chrriff, grab that baby up if you finally can, she has a ton of potential and will make a damn fine looking and dependable ride once you do her up proud. Do not let anyone try to cram their nasty tasting cooking down your throat when you have been craving some other tasty morsel.

    Silverfox, you have an amazing way with words my friend and a truly enlightened view of "the magic of old cars". You perfectly described how I feel about my wagon, which incidentally, in 190K miles has never left me stranded on the side of the road. It has always managed to limp back home before collapsing in the driveway or been fixed on the fly. Not bad for GM junk, eh?

    Geez, almost missed the excitment! (Too busy with shnooks who call themselves building contractors.)

    We do have a 'Lounge' for opinions and off topic stuff. What we've never done though is had a Lemon section on the forum. I think we all know that our cars come with Factory Warts. So we just buckle up and find the best components to help them overcome, like any good Marine would do.

    Its a hobby for us. Some of us have more money than others and end up with finer results, some end up with the finer results because they know how, and others come up with ingenious work-arounds.

    Ain't it enough that our women give us the space to tinker and play? We've got enough pressure in these doubtful times, as men, that we should enjoy our successes and support those that have the passion and will to keep these beasts rolling with style and reliability.

    That's my nickle's worth. :)

    I had a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood, cream with butterscotch cloth. It sure was a pretty car, loaded with ride leveling, moonroof, lighted entry, auto climate control, it was a true automobile in its own right. I bought it at $1,200 in 1997 while in my JR year of high school. I wanted to drive that for the winter and keep my '78 Thunderbird Diamond Jubbilee in the garage.

    The Cadillac already had major rot but everything worked and along with the 500 cid engine was rock solid. I beat the ever living h**l out of that poor car. I was watching "The Rockford Files" alot then, and wondered if my Cadillac could do what was in the show. Just like a stupid teenager, I tried it. I did a lot of stupid things with a wonderful car (now I see it) that I should have never done.

    This '76 would never fail me, never leave me stranded, never ask to be garage kept, never taken to a Cadillac dealer, it just kept going. Not many cars today would be able to keep up with the demands that I pushed it into, most would spray their guts all over the road before letting me continue.

    So when I see a 70s GM car or truck, I have a lot of respect for the motor company. From the styling, to the ride quality, and well most people where brought up with American cars, I see when people still gave the dignity and pride in what they built and drove.

    Remember, the only real thing that keeps us from the primates, is civility. Once that stops, its back to square one.

    beware the lt1. i got used to the anemic 4.3ltr that's in my caprice,
    took the TiKi-WaGoN down to top off the tank for winter storage, and put her sideways down my street:chirp:purely by accident!

    I'm amazed at the punishment my wagon was able to endure in the West Texas desert.
    I've bent a lower control arm and broken a few coil springs in the process.
    Did you know wagons can fly?

    I bet you smiled and didn't let right of either, did ya? LOL I get the same thing when I jump out of a drive in the white 93 and hop into the blue 92, a huge difference in power, the blue one is all sh*ts and giggles on wet roads. But wait till I get her all done with my planned bolt on goodies, then she will be out for LT1 blood.

    Those 4.3 V8's are still pushing 200hp, so it should run fairly decent, doesn't it?
