One-Owner 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix LJ for sale on BaT Auctions - ending October 30 (Lot #89,116) | Bring a Trailer
Wow. Almost $600 for those Hurst Hatches back in 1977. The radio accommodation package must be where they saved some money... Very nicely appointed car otherwise. Vintage security system in the fender is a nice touch.
It's interesting to see the trans am influences on this car. And growing up as a car nut in the 80's I accept T-Tops as an awesome upgrade to any car. Because that was what we were told right? Kind of humorous how many vehicles actually came available with T-Tops.
That's true...but I think this generation GP (and Monte) would look good as a ragtop. I think the bones are there - much more than say a ragtop Elite or Cougar of the same vintage. So I guess T-tops will have to do. I had a Monte with T-tops and I loved it at the time. I think I still would.
IMO a beautiful car but have to say I have no experience with T-Tops. My sister and husband had a Firebird with T-Tops. They leaked and then they were stolen. Believe she always liked the car and the T -Tops though.
Did you guys ever imagine an alternate universe where Detroit kept building convertibles? Reason I ask, is that about a year ago Hemmings Classic had a 77-79 T-Bird convertible that was converted when it was new, and it looked pretty good. So the alternate world would have me imagining a big 74-75 Imperial ragtop or how about post 1970 Caddy DeVille convertibles? I think a '77 to 79 Caddy ragtop DeVille would be fetching. Or how about a '73 up LTD convertible? Or how about a '77-up GM B-body rag? I think a 78 Caprice with it's sheer look could pull it off. Or even a Dodge Mirada......A Chevy Monza notchback into a ragtop?
T-tops are great for fine weather driving only. They rattle, they shine the sun down on you constantly, they leak from day one, and people were always trying to steal them. I would never want to own another car with them again. Any car you find that has t-tops in it that spent any amount of time outside will inevitably have floor pans that need replacing due to moisture and rust from all the water that got in. I feel the same way about sunroofs and convertibles too.
I have only had one car with T-Tops. It was a 1983 Mustang. My Dad had the same misgivings about T-Tops (and sunroofs) and warned me that they would lead to nothing but trouble. I never had a single issue. I was young and was constantly taking them out and putting them back in. They always sealed up fine and I don't recall them rattling. So I guess some made it into production that bucked the trend.
Yeah, but you guys gotta remember that these cars and the Cutlasses and such were the first cars to get T-tops in any numbers. In fact, didn't Pontiac have like a 50th Anniversary GP with Hurst Hatches? I agree, a lot of people associated them with Daytonas, IROC's 5.0's, etc. but there was a lot of GM PLC's with them too. Heck, there was even Cordobas and such with them
