Are wagons falling out of fashion?...or just finding a different market??

Im noticing that there are more and more wagons for sale....Ebays covered in them...:49:

    ....so i pose the question...

"are they people trying to cash in on the apparent popularity?
...or people that bought wagons to be cool?
...and now they're on to the next fad!?"

this is not meant to offend anyone...just pondering...thats all:D

Let them sell them and overpopulate the market with their "Wishful Thinking" High prices. Then when they do not sell, they keep lowering them and we buy them all up. Some of the prices these guys are asking is more then what they sold for new, many times more. Since when did anything but a House or Harley go up in value? Surely not a wagon with some bolt on junk, like 22" wheels and "Cool at this very minute" trinkets.

Here is a great example, this so called "Rat Rod" is so over priced it is not even funny. I could care less what is under the hood or if it was on the Hot Rod Power Tour or not. Its a joke! If that is worth the asking price, I am gonna start looking for rotted out, hammered junk to stuff a new motor in and ask $10k plus for them.

    I don't think so.
I just think the style has got diluted. In the 60's, there were very few 'sport utilities', so if people wanted more utility, they had little choice but to buy a wagon. When the manufacturers caught on to to the SUV craze, more buyers (not necessarily wagon 'enthusiasts') wanted that type of vehicle. The wagon wasn't as 'desireable' any more. In other words, a lot of potential 'wagon' buyers bought SUV's. (I'm guilty here).

I think the wagon market is still there. In fact, it's showing signs of a small resurgence. Cadillac just came out with their CTS wagon, and Honda has just announced that their European Accord wagon (not the same as the Accord sold in the U.S.) will be brought to the U.S. and sold as a Acura TSX wagon.

I do a 'wagon' search on E-bay every few days, just to see what's out there. The number of wagons that show up on my search has remained rather steady for a while now - around 270 - 280 wagons at any one time. Also of note, this site http://www.oldstationwagonsforsale.com/ lists a bunch of them, and I've noted the following....
    Currently, they have:
45 wagons for sale from the 50's
44 wagons for sale from the 60's
27 wagons for sale from the 70's
27 wagons for sale from the 80's
75 wagons for sale from the 90's

But for the Benz and Volvo wagons in the 70's and 80's, categories, there wouldn't be much there. Demo Derbys have taken their toll.......

    Rat Rod? NO
Beater with a big block? YES

I think its a combination of both, Rev.
When housing prices shot through the roof, For Sale signs popped up like weeds around here. There were more sellers than buyers. Now there are tons of owners desperate to sell at bargain prices.
Supply and demand is a funny game.

Once the fad wagon buyers have their fill, and demand comes back to normal, there will still be a lot of wagons out there with desperate sellers.

Good point, Krash, but I think that logic will apply more to new car purchases.

I think that they fell out of fashion as cars became euro-japanese styled. Everyone wanted a sports car...and then couldn't fit the lumber or groceries in it!! So then, there were no station wagons, only vans and SUVs. I think that a lot of people bought vans and SUVs which replaced station wagons in the marketplace. Now that gas mileage has caught up with trucks, hatchbacks are re-emerging on the market, and perhaps even wagons one day.

It's such a versatile car, it definitely has a place today. U.S. and and Government owned car makers, are as usual, "behind the eight-ball" missing the cues from the public.

I think they are. If the younger generation wants a hauler, they dont buy wagons, they will get SUVs instead. Even the wagons made today are really just cars with a lift back. Today the average kid that buys a wagon, by kid I mean the 20-30- something buys it to gut. I cant tell you how many people have remarked theyd buy my 72 Dodge for the 400 motor and torque-flight tanny. They have some Duster or Dart theyd put it into and dump the wagon. To me the wagon is in too cherry shape to be a parts car so ive declined every time to sell it.

Watch, these 60s and 70s wagons will come around. People are tried of paying 10,000 for a 1966 convertable Mustang or 67 Camero. These cars were hot when they werenew and are still today, and in todays economy people are burned out on paying outragious amounts for them. Ive often said, you go to car shows you see endless rows of Chevelles, Cameros and Mustangs. People walk right past them. Its the weird **** that grabs peoples attention. he Dodge Monaco I have, the Olds Vista Cruiser, the 74 Chevy Vega I once had, christ even a Ford Pinto. People are actually paying upwards of 6000-8000 bucks for a dammed Pinto. The fewer of them that exist the bigger the demand goes, thereby raising the cost to get one. Look at the Edsel. They couldnt give them away back when they were new, Ford took a bath on the Edsel. Today the Edsels are among the most sought after cars of the 50s.

Bottom line a turn-key car from the 60s or 70s , a car that needs NO work to get ruunning, weather its a 71 Ford Pinto or a 1977 Country Squire wagon , youll pay money for it. The days of the 200 dollar unpopular turn key cars of the 1960s and 1970s are over. Just like the barn yard finds, most have already been found.

Good for you Forever. I cant count how many duster Darts, Chargers, Road Runners, Challengers and Cuda's I see at local car shows. But I can count how many Mopar Wagons I have seen, its not hard to count to zero. Do not get me wrong, I love all the old muscle cars, but I can't express how great it would be to see some hopped up or even stock wagons getting some love.

I had a girl I went to school with chuckle at the wagon video I just made for the site, coz I posted it up there as well. She said, "wow you got old quick, driving around in a grocery getter and bragging about it like its something special". I said, "let me guess, you have a Jeep Liberty that your husband drives and you drive a Caravan". She said, "close, he drives a Toyota Tercel and I drive a Grand Caravan". I just said, " OMG, you think I am tacky for loving Wagons? Give me a break, you are a typical soccer mom married to skirt wearing daddy, yet it takes a real man to drive a Wagon!"

I do love 60s Mustangs and Cameros but jesus thy are everywhere and the ones for sale they want xorbtant amounts for. Even bucket 60s Mustangs they want at least 3000 or more for. At least here, people are asking way too much for them. I had seem bubble top 61 Impala for sale, the rot was so bad on the car the body panels were fallng off in the wind. They wanted 3500 for te whole car. It was way beyond even being a donor car.

But watch, in the nxt few years, wagons will come around. People wll want them, since hey are icons of the era, and you wont pay Barrett-Jackson prices to get one. The 60s and 70s wagos are turning into icons of th decades. People lov nostlaga. They will remember their moms takig them to soccer practice in one, or going on camping trips in one and will want to reminis. They will start coming around .....

I think that wagons ARE the current FAD. Everyone wants what they grew up with now at that time in their life... In time, they'll probably drop back to a niche group as always.
As for 60's and 70's car prices, don't even get me started... When I was looking for a project, I had a little under $1k (From the time I was 9-13 was when I was looking). You know what that would buy me?
    My top pics were:
    74 T/A
    a 60's -70's mopar (perferably wagon)
Followed by most ANY BOP OR caddy!

After 4 years I came across my 87 cutlass for $500. While it barely ran and was smashed up, it wasn't the $3000 price I was seeing for rotted shells that didn't even roll. So I took a dive about a decade later than I wnated. In the end I enjoy the car, but I still want a 60's or 70's car eventualy. (Not that I'd sell the cutlass, in addition to)

I'm keeping my wagon. Good luck getting me to sell it. (Not to mention if I did my dad would probably literally KILL me.)

Oh and forever, even though you're all the way out in CA, if you ever want to sell, I'll give you 4x what you paid... :)
At least you know I'll take care of it. (Something tells me you aren't to eager to sell)

well heres the way I see it...
Ive had wagons for about 30+ years...
everyone rattled my cage for them...
...then a few years ago....those same dorks started calling...saying...
..."hey...know of any cool wagons for sale?"....

but now... I see them ALL OVER egay...and CL...and they're finished???
they cant be making much money on them...so?...why?
Are they jumping off the 'bandwagon'?....whats next?....Mopeds?:D

I think I'll just wait another year and start scooping them up at bargain basement prices....and start my own country...
...with no borders:D....REVLAND.....its gotta nice ring dont you think?:biglaugh:

Interesting read. All I can offer is that when we were looking for a 65-67 Ford full size wagon, 4 that we checked, and had been for sale for months (all most years) all sold within August of 2009.

Maybe just fate dickin with me, or maybe an upswing in interest?
