In the early-1960s Humble spent millions of dollars on a new advertising campaign to promote its Esso “Extra” premium gasoline blend. Researchers working on the program found that the average American responded favorably to the use of animals in advertising. Later a clever advertising copywriter working on the project named Emery Smith came up with the “Put A Tiger In Your Tank” slogan and the tiger was chosen for the mascot to promote the sale of the high test fuel. After the introduction to rev things up a bit more Esso came out with tiger stickers and toy tiger tails that attached to a cars fuel filler and ended up selling 2.6 million of them. The new campaign ended up being such a big hit that Time magazine in 1964 declared it to be “The Year of the Tiger.” View a video of one of the Esso commercials (below) released at the time to see the Tiger cartoon character in action. The corner of Brown and Free Streets in the City of Portland, Maine is the location of today’s photo. The entire lot appears to be a part of the operation centered by the near new Cities Service filling station and service garage building located on the corner. A tire shop and car wash building are visible on the far left, and a parking lot on the far right. The large masonry structure in the background is an Eastman Bros. & Bancroft department store.
https://eu.azcentral.com/story/news...ted-jaguar-selfie-litchfield-park/3125031002/ What is an adult in a tiger costume even doing at a gas station? In my opinion, costumes are for children. Immature adults have totally ruined the gas station. It has literally become a zoo petting event the lineups to pet the mascots were horrendous, waiting forever in line and fully three quarters of the people in the lines were stupid adult women wanting to take photos of themselves with mascots, eventually one like-minded father in the crowd says loudly "children at the front of the line, adults at the back, children get to go first" and things went better after that, honest to god what kind of grown adult wants to get in childrens way so that they can pet adults dressed as animals, take selfies with them, and gawk at them. It ruins the outing for the families with children. Those adults are acting like children and they need to grow up. What is this woman thinking that a carnivorous beast will be cute and cuddly. What on earth, didn't she realize that the disney cartoons she watched were only movies? I figured we all grow out of that when we reach adulthood, maybe not. Even my kids know better than that. I just asked them if they would like to pet a jaguar and they replied, "no because it would gobble me up."
