We got some great deals back then, but one of the best was a '56 Chevy Bel-Air 4-Dr Sedan, 265 V-8, 3-Speed that a friend of mine bought for $15. I towed it down the road with a chain and yelled out to him to turn the key on and pop the clutch. It started right up. We dis-connected the chain and drove it home the rest of the way.

Wow. That’s a great story. I love that there were car hounds coast to coast.

I paid $100 for my rusty '56 4-door Bel-Air with a 265 and cast-iron Powerglide, in 1972. It was unmolested. The engine ran smooth and those 265s would idle at 450 r.p.m.. My highschool buddy who was restoring a Chevy II, I think, Nova which he got from his aunt and uncle (His uncle bought it new. But, said he hated the car. I think, it was his wife's daily driver) was amazed at how quiet the exhaust was. The only thing that wasn't quiet were the varnished lifters. When I pulled the valve covers, both were caked with that mud you got from pre-PCV valved engines which were mostly driven for short distances. I think, the person I bought it from had bought it from some elderly people. So, then I thought I could quiet the lifters, through attempting to adjust them. Since then, it never ran smooth again. I ended up buying a rust-free Tennessee body without a front end. It was only a 210 and I ended up transferring my drivetrain, trim and interior into it. I ended up getting a 283 from somewhere and rebuilt it in highschool auto tech class. I left it in there, until I sold it

You think the guy in Pinto got thrown out of the Playboy plaza cause he wasn’t tipping the Bunnies? That’s my take on it......

Is this the same 56 Fairlane you have yet to provide any photographic evidence of?
