This kind of set-up was, and still is, illegal in California.

Same thing for the big-rig triples you see on the interstate.... 'nope' in California. I saw them for the first time when I came to Oregon.....

 

Are you sure they're illegal everywhere, in California, or are just restricted to certain assigned stretches of straight road?

 

Yep, I saw Triples today when I was on I-84 in the Columbia Gorge.
My boys love it when we go on a trip into Oregon. They keep track of all of the "three trailerers" they see.

 

Do you explain to your boys that they're illegals? The trucks, I mean

 

Once again, it depends on the state, as to how many multiples are allowed on an Interstate. I know that Cali and Washington allow Canada trains (double trailers where the lead trailer has a fifth wheel for the shorter trailer. The truck still must not exceed single axle loading ratings in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, Washington allows the pup trains, but with only two trailers.

 

They had a heck of a time even getting single trailers allowed, over here. The reason for the resistance was that it would take much longer to overtake such a long vehicle, on a two-lane roadway

 

It is legal ​

to pull three trailers in Oregon, at least for truckers with the proper licensing. I'm not certain if a private individual can do it with a standard driver's license.
