I don't know. I've always changed the oil at 5-6k miles with full synthetic (when I do it, the dealer gave me 3 free oil changes that were supposed to be full synthetic). It was ticking ever so slightly when we first bought it brand new, the sales weasel and dealer service tech said it was normal. It started getting louder about 6k miles ago and I finally got the dealer to fix it under warranty. The oil had junk in it and the filter had some glitter, so I'm going to be doing some back to back oil changes and watching it... no CEL or anything.

There's a kit you can buy that, before you get your oil changed, you get a sample and send it off to be analyzed. Once you have the results, if anything is out of the ordinary, you can present it to the dealer for explanation. I know it costs money, but what is that cost compared to a new engine?

The glitter should be proof enough for legal action. Wasn't there some sort of "Lemon Law" which enebled customers to make the dealer buy the car back?

Lemon laws are on the state level and are as varied as the States are.

On the Federal level, it's auto recalls that can prompt a buyback, such as with the dirty diesel VWs.

The glitter is proof of nothing. Dodge considers the matter closed as the engine isn't making the noise anymore. The dealer shop foreman even told me that it didn't matter what was in the oil as per Dodge's official service procedures wasn't a required check for them when replacing the cams and lifters...

I'd keep the glitter stored somewhere, in case it starts acting up again. This sounds like the calm before a storm. Dodge would like nothing better than for a customer to believe a bunch of Bee Ess and thereafter discard anything that could prove them wrong. The only time any sediment should show up at all is during break-in. And even then, it shouldn't be as noticeable as it sounds in your case. I suspect premature valvetrain wear which is probably now compensated for, in the short run, by a hydraulic lifter

That issue on the Charger scares me! From what I'd read the Pentastar V6 after 2013 is a great motor...but I did warranty this car to the moon...my first Chrysler (other than the 98 Ram that was basically given to me)

I change oil every 3-4K miles, religiously. That may be overkill, but better safe than sorry.

That's why I put this mod on my Suburban:

Then again, as oil gets better and manufacturers work towards electric cars more I wonder if manufacturers will start making their engines cheaper. If I'd have used this two-oil filter system with Amsoil's oil in my Caprice with a 305 (sigh,) that was such a good engine that was difficult to kill in the first place so I don't think I could kill it with this mod unless the oil hose was yanked off or cut. If I'd have put 5 million miles on it the engine would still be running with this system. It's not too hard to imagine a 305 getting to half a million miles in the first place even on a regular old oil filter.

I love those for the older rattly diesels and basically any engine that gets severe duty all the time, such as a motorhome or service truck.

All that system is able to do is to filter out what's already wearing away
