    I wonder if modern architects even studied Bauhaus and Art Deco. I also wonder what they're storing in that opaque glass tower

    Architecture in Europe was completely different from North America back then, that's for sure, but Ivy, you have to realize that here, the oil companies were looking for what would bring customers to a station in order to make the most profit. The Land of the Free was also the Land of Limitless opportunity, and most oil companies were all over that. However, there were a couple examples of an oil company not building to excess; if you look at the Shell station design dating from the 1920's, they were fairly minimal in design, and did not really embrace Art Deco, except in the largest markets (such as New York and Los Angeles), and not to the extent others did.
