I once knew a gal that grew up in L.A. in the Fifties, she remembered him getting started. Krash, I'm sure you'd also remember, since you're our resident Greater L.A. expert. Didn't Scheib start out his price at $9.95?

I sure do, and I used them, ONCE, too.......BIG mistake on my part.

Was driving my '64 Pontiac Ventura one day. I was in Santa Monica, pulling out of an alley onto Santa Monica Bl. I stuck my nose out a bit so I could see traffic (buildings on both sides of the alley...) - car was blocking the sidewalk and the front of the Ventura was at the edge of the first 'driving' lane. Guy parked on the street to my right decides to back up without looking, and creams my right door.

I decide I don't like the color of the Ventura, so at the same time I get the door repaired, I'm going to do a complete color change on the whole car. Had one body shop do the body work, but no paint - and they didn't even make it ready for paint. And Scheib didn't do anything to it. Even after the new paint, you could see the bad body work on the door. I ruined that car........Dumped it pretty quick after that and bought my Corvair.

There was a similar type of shop out here in the early 80's, wish I could remember the name but same thing..... paint any car for $99.99, and the long gone slip shot corner car lots took full advantage. The shop even offered for I think $10 cheaper the "colour of the month special". So lets say blue was this months offer........ You could not argue it was not "blue", but WTF kind of blue was it?? Had the looks of maybe they went to every body shop, bout every blue leftover no matter what dark, light, etc, poured it in a 45 gallon drum and mixed it together......"colour of the month"

^^^I remember that chain, but I too cannot remember the name. You're close to the mark on the "color of the month" special, but they came by it by purchasing whatever the paint suppliers had left over. Scheib also did that, in addition to other cost-cutting measures. I had an acquaintance who worked for the last Scheib here in Everett 20 years ago.

This other cheap paint job chain came around in the early 70's:
Word was, their quality was a bit better than Scheib's....
