As auto designers once were, so were designers of infrastructure. Not only of tastefull buildings. What's also eye-catching, complementary and harmonius to other objects of vintage such as homes and public gardens were lamps. here goes:

Street lights and pretty much everything were more detailed and ornate back in the good ole days. Strangely they were also more difficult to make, yet even homes and office buildings in America today are just basic boxes.

Because everything is now easy to make, that must be the reason why so many people have become soft and lazy.

Only one lamp. But, I would love to see a city built fresh like this one:

How about these pictures from a more historic/touristy part of Vancouver called "gastown"? These are current photos, but the trend around Vancouver, is to go with "dark skies compliant" LED lighting that is shrouded and directed to the road, so very little glare extends upwards. In more commercial strips, many older areas are going back to the vintage look. Gastown_1_38da86e6-8b8e-439f-9eda-24e69d4ad157.jpg 2f71e029ac4ffc189a8621967032b3c6.jpg DTGAS00029-L.jpg

Why should the lighting get directed downwards? Are they afraid space aliens might not know where Vancouver might be?

Well, because the road is downwards... us city folks want to be able to see the stars more clearly instead of the orange glare of street lights.

Back when Germany had HALT signs, before having them replaced with STOP ones:

Well, yeah, they could confuse it with Vancouver, WA!

Art form. Or lack of funds for color film, take your pick. But photography for the recording of history usually gets the governmental short shrift, so cheap equipment and B&W film.

Maybe, a vintage dealership thread might be a good idea?:
