We got a couple of drive-in theaters where I'm at, just put them up a couple years ago, real popular too. Soon as the Barge is done with her heart transplant I think I'll take the brood out for a little jaunt over and see a motion picture the old fashioned way.
I've never been to a drive in. I grew up in South Florida where it's hot and humid most of the year and sitting in your car on a hot and humid night with skeeters doesn't sound like fun.
When I first read this, I thought oh my his wife needs a heart transplant and he calls her the Barge and then I got it.
You missed out on a part of American car culture, then. The fun kids had in the falling darkness, playing under the screen (my big brother Fred would spin the 'merry go round' as hard as he could to make the kids on it get dizzy), walking to the snack bar to get eats or take a whizz, driving down the freeway and seeing a glimpse of the screen and attempt to guess the movie (my brother Tim, next after Fred, was always good at that), or in later years, take your best girl to a crappy movie just so the two of you could 'get it on.'
We went to several drive in movies along I75 near Ocala. Normally it's a converted flea market. My first dates were always at a drive in movie. I almost named our first son STARLITE.
I'm totally fine with it. I've got serious ADHD. I wouldn't be able to handle all the distractions. Even going to a movie with loud action going on, my brain hears the guy 2 rows behind me chomping on his popcorn and that is all I can focus on. Growing up as a teen we were smack dab in between the Atlantic ocean and the Everglades so our weekend days involved riding our dirtbikes or fishing in the Glades and nights included cruising the Ft. Lauderdale strip and hanging out with our chicks on the beach. So I'm perfectly fine with my childhood. I decided to go see Smokey and the Bandit last night. I haven't seen it in many years. I didn't realize how cheesy of movie it was. However, I believe Jackie Gleason made that movie a success. In my opinion, you could replace every single actor in that movie with someone else, except Jackie and it would be a hit. I can't think of another actor from that time that could do Sheriff Buford T Justice as well as he did. "Boy the first thing I'm gonna do when we get home, is punch your mama in the mouth."
Saw this last night as well - really fun movie, and even though I've seen it many times I still enjoyed it - especially on the big screen! All around cheezy and entertaining, and left me wanting to beat the crap out of my car when I left...lol
I lead a deprived childhood and teen years - no drive in movie theaters or burger joints in mid town Manhattan - NYC not Kansas.
You really were deprived. And Eagle Freek (apologies, can't remember your name), I too had what are now classed as ADD and ADHD; I was prescribed Haldol from age 8 to 14. So I understand the "can't sit still/pay attention/etc." manifestations; I guess it chalks up to how things really were during our growing years. You missed out on drive-ins, and I missed out on Atlantic Seaboard beaches (I was born in Rhode Island but the family moved West when I was two).
Totally fun, silly movie...just some good old boys, never meaning no harm, beats all you never saw been in trouble with the law since the day they were born...wait wrong show...
