Have you driven a Ford.... then you don't know what you're missin' Have you driven a For, driven a Ford Have you driven a Ford, lately? Shiny Side Up!
Hey! PT, thanks. That's neat. Gotta Mustang question. The ammeter connects at the starter relay, with a big yellow wire (key on circuit) acting as a shunt. It runs in parallel with the ammeter. One wire from the yellow fusible link, and the other to the key-off circuit Red Orange wire. The confusion for me is that they all connect to the same post on the starter relay. I'm just about to finish the underhood wiring and that one almost confuses me. The ammeter is supposed to pick up the load in use, so connecting it in series makes sense. But with the shunt wire in parallel and less resistance (10 gauge AWG), I can't see how both ammeter wires on the same post makes no sense to me. My starter relay has one extra post. the battery and links are all on the bottom, the starter on the other big one, and the red/blue from the Start point on the Ignition/Tranny circuit. The other post is the "I" circuit - unused. It's an aftermarket starter relay. The original didn't have that post. The Ammeter connects with a Red/Orange stripe and Yellow/ LT Green wire, supposedly at the fusible links (which at this point looks like its the same relay post where the battery POSITIVE goes. Could you take a picture at your Starter relay or whereever these two wires hook up under the hood, please?
Hey Norm, did you "oops" and post this in the wrong thread? Here are some pics, I've got some differerant colours but I hope this helps. I'm no sparkey and what your doing is a bit too much for me so I "hope" I can answer any questions. 2 more pics coming
yeah I thought ProTouring might chime in here sooner. Totally forgot you had one. My relay is really old style, but I get the connections. In the first pic, way off to the right is a yellow one. Is that a Yellow/White striped wire. The yellow. lt green one connects to that one. Basically, you're pics tell me I'm right. They both go to the same post. Weird. An aftermarket ammeter hook up might help to clear up my doubts, The problem is that the gauge gets powered up through the Instrument voltage regulator (IVR) which keeps the gauge voltage at 5 volts, not 12 volts. If I could score an F-150 voltmeter and change the face and unit, that would be the cat's meow. Totally forgot you had to peel back the air cleaner ducting. Thanks for the help. Really appreciate it. I owe you one.
Sorry I disapeared Norm, My honey needed the PC for work. 1985 Mustang, every thing you see is 100% origonal
No problem, I was checking other aftermarket install sheets. I know why I was confused. The shunt wire usually goes between the two Ammeter wires in a schematic. The images make it look like it's in parallel, but it really is in Series. Autometer and VDO both show them running across from the battery POSITIVE and the Alternator B connection with a shunt in between. That's what it does in fact. I'm good. Finally penetrated my 1/4" thick skull. Thanks for your help. I'll check the 1985 Mustang wiring in the books I got at the Library, to confirm everything. I'll cross link in the other thread tomorrow. I'm wiped. It was running up to 30C with a humidex temp of 32C. My wife told me it was 37C in Monterrey, MX today, going to 40C. Yikes.
