Very interesting article. I have never heard of this mishap until today.
I can hardly believe the magnitude of the damage.

 

Dad and I were discussing this, Galveston Harbor, and Port Chicago, owing to the common thread between them and the Port of Tianjin accident--all caused by the improper handling of chemicals (Halifax, Galveston and Tianjin) or munitions (Port Chicago). Although there are some who theorize that Port Chicago was caused by a mutiny of the black sailors, that has zero credence based in the testimonies of the black sailors as well as the white officers, who dealt with the sailors' refusals to load ammunition, but otherwise follow all other lawful and direct orders. The main contributions would be cited as failing machinery, no munitions handling training either for the black sailors or the white Chief Petty Officers or Officers, and a "betting pool" by the command Officers of the various divisions forcing the black sailors to work far faster than was safe.
