This entire section of Arlington, Virginia was completely redeveloped after this picture was taken and Washington, DC's Metro Rail was brought in. This is the intersection of Wilson Blvd and North Glebe Road.

Bob Peck Chevrolet used to be on the opposite corner. When it was torn down, the building that replaced it incorporated a touch of the dealership's architectural style since it had become a major landmark in the area.

There's a name for that architectural design, but the name escapes me right now. Look at 1960's bowling alleys and restaurants to see the similarities.

I can't remember what year it was but my co worker, another friend and I were headed to the Ozarks in his Chevy pickup with his small runabout boat that I'd just repainted. The trailer hitch ball came off staying on the trailer tongue. I was driving and stopped directly in front of a hardware store in Mexico, Missouri. They sent us down the road to a new store, Wal-Mart, to buy the replacement tralier ball.
This was the first Wal Mart any of us ever saw. It was actually not a large store yet seemed to have everything from hardware to clothing. The first big box store in our area was in Peoria and was called Big Lots.

As for those grocery stores where they bagged and loaded your car we had one of those in our small Illinois hometown. It didn't last long until they went back to bagging and just carrying the groceries to the cars.
Other than a newspaper boy, my first job was stock boy and carry out boy at a small private owned grocery store. Decent job.

I love how they incorporated the old dealership into the new office building. I believe the name of the architecture is "googie" which you can "google" to find pics of :)

charlesphoenix.com has lots of examples of it, mostly from Southern California.

This looks like a new poster, but the picture is vintage. I think this is an event in Brazil, but I can't read Portuguese.

THAT'S IT! I just couldn't remember that one name. Ship's Restaurant in L.A. is the pinnacle of Googie design, IMHO.

Good to know. I had never heard the term "Googie". Always thought it was just "mid century modern" or "doo-wop".

When I look at the street scenes here I spend as much time looking at the nice old buildings and homes.
I have no idea what the different styles are. I just like them.
