I can see the ad now: "Runs and drives great, air conditioning not required, as the flow-through air works magnificently! No need to wash and wax, the car has a unique patina to it that is unmatched. You'll be the talk of the town as you cruise the boulevards in a car no one will soon forget! Be the envy of your neighbors!"

That reminds me of my fondest memory of my early childhood--moving our family (Mom, Dad and five kids aged 12 down to me at 3 1/2) from Tigard, OR to Mountlake Terrace, WA in a '66 Bug convertible. Dad drove, I sat on Mom's lap, my sister was sandwiched between our two oldest brothers and my middle brother Geoff in the cubby under the rear window!

I had a pale blue VW beetle and three kids. Often the two youngest would ride behind the rear seat in that cubby. Sometimes I threatened to put them in the front trunk.
We actully went tent camping with that Beetle.

My 1966 Beetle looked just like that every time I told someone at school that I was going to the beach.
The surfboards went on the roof, of course.

Sure seems like a lot of us had VW Beetles. I wondered who owned the millions that were once on the road.
Even down here in the boonies I saw a few almost daily. I also saw lots of 64-67 Mustangs. Seems as if they are all gone now. SUV's and mini vans took over.

Ours was Yukon Yellow with a black top and upholstery. My oldest brother Fred turned left on a yellow turning red light. His soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend ended up with a separated shoulder and the poor Volks was bashed axle-to-axle, but good. So Dad sold it to the local VW dealer here in Everett, who restored it for his daughter, painting it black. Fast forward to the early 2000's, and a guy stops at my work, driving a Yukon Yellow '66 drop-top with black top and upholstery, which he said he bought here in Everett. He was taking it to auction for $11 G's minimum. Never heard if he got it though.
