That's right, but what got me was the fact he was going underneath an overpass at the time of the accident; one account said the body panels blew off at that moment which sent him out of control. It's my humble opinion that running down the Autobahn, wet or dry pavement, was a huge mistake. It's the reason why the Southern California Timing Association went to Bonneville; one big, flat space gives the same conditions from start to the end of each run track.
I don't know if the Germans had access to Bonneville, because of diplomatic issues, since the National Socialists were ruling at the time
I can't remember the actual book title, but it was an extensive treatise on the Volkswagen Beetle, from inception to the "New Beetle." The author gave an extensive pre-history of it through the history of Nazi Germany's racing programs, including Herr Rosemeyer's crash and death. The author spoke of Hitler's desire to only perform most of Reich feats of performance within Germany's borders. The Grand Prix circuit was the only exception, and the Auto-Unions just about cleaned up everywhere, but there was no way Hitler was going to allow them to run at Bonneville.
That's strange. He allowed the Hindenburg Zeppilin to dock in New York and could've ran in Bonneville, also as a publicity stunt. By the way, when did speed tests begin at Bonneville? To my memory, they started in the late 40's
Just saw this today. Here's a documentary over the entire Horch, Wanderer, DKW and AUDI turned Auto Union history: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXW5fh2jUao
Well, this thread took a bit of an odd turn. If you recall it started out as a car retrieval. We were successfully able to get the car on the second attempt. I posted that story here: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=332413#post332413
