I needed a replacement family type car as we sold our Durango in favor of a large F350 V10 to tow our new 5th wheel camper..

Our other car was a Miata.. while fun, not family friendly with 2 kids.. So I sold the Miata Saturday
for $3800 and started the Craigslist search for something we could use other than the big truck.

I don't recall ever noticing these when they came out.. They only made them for 2005, 6 and 7.

It was right in my own small town, two streets down.. listed at $3300 or best offer.
I went to see it, I drove it, I liked it, and we agreed on $2700. I think it's pretty cool for short money.

2006 Ford Freestyle SEL.. All wheel drive, pretty loaded.. just no navigation or DVD, but all the other ammenities.

It's a nice mid size car with well thought out way back seats the flip over and fold flat..

Not sure if it's really a station wagon, but I like it and I'm calling it one :)

    Looks nice, Kev.
That price is way below market value. An average miles '06 would be in the $7-8,000 range around here.

I'd suggest you check the reviews on Edmunds.com. I know these did have a few issues, one of them being the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Also, the same vehicle was sold in 2008 and 2009 with a slightly different front end, and a different name - Taurus X

This one has 158K on it.. so 'high miles' for sure.. however the couple I got it from
had all the service records for CVT fluid changes, 'Motorcraft synthetic blend' only oil changes, recent brakes,
ball joints and an engine mount.. It's got a few scuffs but it's a great car for under $3 grand..
Everything works..AC is ice cold, 6 CD stereo sounds great, interior is great..

They moved on to a Nissan Quest due to 3rd child arriving next month and the other 2 are still in car seats.
My kids are 10 and 8 so they have no problem hopping in the way back and buckling themselves in.

I like that "3 bar" grill look better on the Taurus X.. Found a write up on how to imitate it using chrome trim..
    Looks like this when done:

$30 worth of peel and stick chrome trim.. Might just be my forst 'mod' to the new wagon :)

unlovedford.. I go way back with Torinos.. I've had 6 over the years..

Most recently, this one.. Sold it to a guy in France. If it had been a '72 I'd still have it.

I like the custom grille work. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge.

Was thinking the same, I have seen others mainly with full size trucks buying those custom perforated grill covers to then experience a hotter running engine as after all you are restricting air flow, mainly in stop and go traffic to then complain about engine temp but don't want to remove it because 'my grill looks cool':banghead3:

I think a majority of cooling airflow comes from under the grill..
Look at the funky stainless grill cover my car already has on it..
Runs cool as a cucumber as is.. I'd probably be improving airflow ~

I think most of the cool air flow comes from below the grilles in the bumper area on most vehicles now. Should be snowing in NH by next week so you will stay cool as a cucumber till spring..... June!

Dang, that is a nice looking wagon. You practically stole it. I have actually had these (and the later Taurus X) on my radar for a while since the wife and I have been discussing moving up to a car with third row seating. Like Marshall said, you bought this one way bellow average. Congrats on the find. Enjoy it.

Keep an eye on the CVT and keep the throttle body clean. A couple of guys here at work have them and I've done some work on them. Overall they seem like pretty decent vehicles. Also keep an eye on the rear brake pads. They seem to go through rear brakes more than normal.
