Lots of identifying numbers on that pic. Any text describing what happened?

    Here's a possible scenario.

56 Olds parked on side of highway
52/53 Olds (or whatever the rolled over car is) slows down and moves to left a little bit to give it room.
57 Plymouth, not paying attention until too late, veers to the right trying to avoid the slowing down Olds, slams into it and rolls it.
Car behind 57 Plymouth slams into the Plymouth and sends him veering off the road.

The Valiant wagon in the lanes going the other direction, rubbernecks and runs into the car in front of him, (What is that car--a Ford maybe?), who had also slowed down to see what was happening.

Whatever went down, it sure did make a mess.

Man, rubberneckers just p!$$ me off. That, more than anything else, screws up good-flowing traffic.

the worstest ones are the ones slowing down to see what happened on the other side of the freeway! the center divider wall should be tall enough to block the view of the other side. here in L.A., "obstructing traffic" is a basic human right. expecting people to not look is not only foolish, but a crime against humanity. blocking the view so there's nothing to look at here, I the answer to the problem... ---but, that costs money, so it probably won't happen...

Kind of like those miles of barrels, barracades, and signs warning about one lane road work ahead. By the time you get there traffic is stopped in that one lane and usually in the other direction even though there is no road work there.
And there is still a line in the lane that's gonna be shut down right to the last barracade with some danged fool trying to cut in.:banghead3:

    Photo #12922----
Two accidents on Santa Ana Freeway

"At 8:30 a.m. a stalled car was rear ended in the fast lane of the northbound Santa Ana Freeway – numbers 3 and 4 in above photo.

After the first accident, Los Angeles Times staff photographer Frank. Q. Brown arrived to take pictures and parked his car, foreground, on the southbound shoulder of the freeway.

Forty minutes after the first accident, five cars collided in the southbound lanes. They were, according to the Los Angeles Times, “slowed by curious drivers ahead of them.” These cars are numbers 1, 2 and 5 in photo above. The overturned car missed Brown’s car by an inch.

Arrow points to injured driver in the second accident, Jesse Kasner. Two cars involved in the second accident were able to drive away."

Wow - Santa Ana Freeway! Didn't realize it was a stretch of road I've actually driven on.....

This could be anywhere from LA all the way to Anaheim, near Disneyland. Based on the appearance, I'm guessing this location is nearer Orange County. The 'sunken' lanes are more common there. Pic shows 4 lanes coming south (toward the camera). There's at least 6 lanes each way there now. A big re-do was just completed around 3 years ago.

Thanks Cat! I resigned myself to never knowing what happened in this picture. So the northbound accident with the Dart wagon happened first and the rubberneckers were in the southbound lanes. How about that? But, I only see 3 cars on the southbound lane that are wrecked, not 5.

Perhaps they were already gone when this photo was taken. By the way I stole this from the HAMB site of vintage scenes.
