Hey Norm, I just now went through all of this thread, and WOW! I am so impressed! You worked so hard on this, and the results are so wonderful. Your wagon really looks great, and from the pics, I would think this was a paint job that cost big bucks! I like the nice color. Great job, Norm! David
Clearcoat rustpaint for Roller painting! For our own good, mama government decided that some products made by the same company shouldn't be sold across the US/Canadian border, by the companies. So far, I haven't heard that private people can't ship a can to a friend. But who knows. Anyway, back when I started investigating the Roller car painting techniques on the moparts.org site, Americans couldn't get tinted Tremclad in quarts. Shortly after, Rustoleum in the US was offering the equivalent in Quarts, but without some colors, and still don't offer Clear Coats in Quarts. We've got it here: In cans: http://www.rustoleum.ca/CBGProduct.asp?pid=6&sid=27073X 145 In Spray cans (touch-up and tight corners) http://www.rustoleum.ca/CBGProduct.asp?pid=7&sid=27073B 522 The Canadian Rustoleum site's sitemap page lists all the colours and brands here: http://www.rustoleum.ca/cbgsitemap.asp The US site's sitemap lists a whole lot of products we don't have too: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGSiteMap.asp Like: HIGH PERFORMANCE WHEEL CLEAR COAT http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=376 CLEAR & BASE COAT REMOVER http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=388 And: RUST REFORMER: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=363&sid=248659 RUST STRIPPER: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=362 So maybe if we've got members living near some US/CDN borders, we could bring it across, and find a carrier who ships paint (DHL, UPS, ???) Obviously you can't do that when things are freezing up, but ... Either that or you guys on the US side start emailing the heck out of Rustoleum to import the Tremclad line down there. Here's the main Tremclad page: http://www.rustoleum.ca/CBGBrand.asp?bid=1 And the different Rust paint products: http://www.rustoleum.ca/cbgcategory.asp?cid=15&Page=All And Tremclad's stock colours (which they do tint up here): http://www.rustoleum.ca/CBGProduct.asp?pid=6
Stefan's Nightmare I'm a hoarder, especially of good links. So since part of my 2014 repairs to my beloved wagon involve bodywork and paint, I'll revive this old 2007 thread. These old threads go into a computer database under Archives, but my wagon is alive and well. To start off, I'm going next week out to the yard that has a complete 1982 Zephyr, with the dead motor and complete car on wheels. I got it for $350, and he'll deliver it for $100, on his flat deck, because he's bringin in a couple other cars on the 14th of March. He tells me his yard is high and dry and barely no snow, because the winds blow it down into a valley below. It'll be milder next week. above -10C, instead of this -30s deep freeze. My neighbour will let me park it in his yard until I can get rid of my 30" of snow in my yard. Here's a couple pics of the new donor: Here's how he describes it: Ref # 518 1982 Mercury Zephyr 4 Dr sedan Brown PARTS Has 3.3L 6 cyl w/A/T, not running, good interior except headliner, good floors and frame. Rust Level: 0-1 He also explains his RUST CODES: Rust levels 0 -None 1 - Slight (finger size) 2 - Medium (fist size)3 - More (boot size) Rep'd - all rust repaired R - Restored So what I see there is merely surface rust on the front end and doors. He's got a 1981 Cougar Sedan and a 1982 Granada sedan, which would both be a PITA to adapt to the Fairmont side panels, but I'll check them out for parts. I think the 1982 3.3L engine has the thicker exhaust manifold, which would help with adding the headers too. So mine could still be running while I get the head rebuilt, right Andy? Anyway, I'm just gonna watch for parts, for now.
Should add that Spring Melt starts after the 3rd week in March, and then the Prairie FLOOD Watches are on. Highways get closed soon after. So mid-March should be fine. He's 3 hours West, by car or bus (I'm taking the bus out in the AM, back by evening). So $100 for delivery is just fine.
Should find out what colour the block is. If it's grey it might be a low mount starter block. That would increase options for a manual tranny. Where is the car? I was thinking about going to a gun show in Carberry on the 8th.
About 10 minutes east of Brandon. In Douglas, MB. And 12 miles west of Carberry, MB. Sounds like a date! :2_thumbs_up_-_anima
Just to refresh my Roller Paint Trivia, I just ran a quick search. My techniques will get refined, especially when Meguiar's has it on their website! Man! http://www.meguiarsonline.com/forum...1-My-quot-rustoleum-50-roll-on-paint-job-quot Neat video with Rustoleum. The comments add details. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qPJTTRWttQ Good DIY and comparison by a car-paint pro. http://www.thesmokingtire.com/2012/how-to-paint-your-car-without-a-gun/ His comment about Rustoleum not having UV protection is true, but the Canadian Tremclad, by Rustoleum does have it. Thins out the same with Mineral Spirits, etc. So Garage storage and a monthly wax job would keep it gleaming for longer. Lots of sites will have variations on doing it, but the documents and info in this very thread, on page 5 are quite similar. http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=711&page=5 What I just saw in that Youtube video, that makes great sense is using a hair blower without the heat on, to pop the bubbles. Sure would save a lot of sanding.
Just found a great thread on an Aussie Site: http://forums.justcommodores.com.au...-tos/76882-diy-painting-your-car-rollers.html He's using Brightside from Interlux Paints - $40 per litre. $50 in the US. Tremclad sells for $14 per litre (US Quart) You need one litre per 2 coats. http://nikka.ca/store/product/3341/INTERLUX-BRIGHTSIDE-PAINT/ Popular for boats too! http://www.boatcraft.com/AllProds2.php?dept=35 I think I'll do like that Video shows and use Rustoleum's Clear Coat.
My friend painted the 1950 Stupidbaker I sold him in my back yard with Rustolium and HVLP paint gun. It looks nice. Did it in January on nice days. No dust, bugs, or leaves to worry about this time of year.
GO FIGURE! International Paints isn't Interlux! This is their website: http://www.yachtpaint.com/default.aspx Owned by this group: http://www.akzonobel.com/us/brands_products/us_brands/performance/interlux.aspx Which takes you here: http://www.yachtpaint.com/default.aspx I liked it better when you knew who owned what. Thank god Ford is still a Ford-owned company. Heinz 57 varieties is now owned by Burger King, which is why MCDonald's won't buy their ketchup anymore. What a whacked out mess! So you pick a country and dig down for Brightside: http://www.yachtpaint.com/can/diy/products/finishes/brightside-polyurethane.aspx Hmmm... I wonder if they have a clearcoat for it.
Blinded by the shine! Dang it! I went hunting again for Roller Painting info. Now you'd think that when the supplier sell the Interlux Brightsides paint through a company called: http://www.yachtpaint.com/can/diy/Pages/default.aspx That I might look for guys who use it on boats with a roller. Never made the connection between Land Yachts and Water Yachts. :banghead3: Looks like it takes a bit more time to dry -24 hours between coats for the Brightsides paint versus 10 for the Rustoleum/Tremclad Paint. I have to ask if its tintable, although one stock colour looks like a good candidate: Sundown Buff Y4237: Bristol Beige Y4207 might be ok for where the woodgrain is: or this Hatteras Off White Y4208. Don't want a dark colour except for the trim. So anyway, I find another Rustoleum 9 part series of Youtube flicks, which are ok for a quick and nasty job on a daily driver 5 coats, and it looks OK! Part 1 May 22, 2011 Paint Prep startup. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOTvS1W1oPw Part 2 May 25, 2011 Body Prep http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVepuam2jZM Part 3 May 31, Body Prep work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE5Lkd4evrc Part 4 June 5, 2011 Removing inner door panels http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl4MBRW9kkE Part 5 June 15, 2011, 1st coat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHxQhmsyEtk Part 6 June 21, 2011 4th coat going on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCd2RM5QD-8 Part 7 July 4, 2011 4 coats on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G6QpcdlE9c Part 8 July 25, 2011 many coats later, last coat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9A5Chp53CA Part 9 August 2, 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJV8KIuulqc Part 10 December 27, 2011 Still looks good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEeaC9Ontak http://forums.justcommodores.com.au...-tos/76882-diy-painting-your-car-rollers.html And I remembered that Aussie's job (Link above) with rolled on Brightsides - Awesome! The cost for 4 cans, plus primer (Pre-Kote Primer from Interlux), and their 333 thinners, will run over $250 with taxes, but she'll shine like she is - a Zephyrized Fox! Here's a good video on a guy who repairs/builds small sail boats: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-SGcSlNmoo And his pics on his website, with comments on things to watch for and tips: http://www.eyeinhand.com/Marginalia/2011/06/27/painting-rolling-and-tipping/ I printed the Aussie's Roller Paint job into a PDF, if anyone wants it. Only included critical pics to get it within our site's upload limits (512KB): View attachment DIY Painting Your Car With Rollers.pdf
OK, just did an abbreviated PDF to comply with our site's upload size (512 KB Limit) of the Boatman's Roller site. Not all the pics are in. The full page becomes a 576 KB PDF, so if you want to see his complete pictures of the 2 boats: http://www.eyeinhand.com/Marginalia/2011/06/27/painting-rolling-and-tipping/ Otherwise, here's the short version with critical pics and tips and visitor comments: View attachment Painting Rolling and Tipping.pdf
