They look good, but they are still normal North American lousy lights! In the Mercury, get a set of Bosch or Hella lamps, and replace the bulbs with PIIA. THEN you will have lights to drive with.
I could really use a lighting upgrade in the W.B.M. It's got the same quad rectangulars that the CP and CS would have, so I assume what you describe Mike would work for me as well? Would I have to upgrade any of the wiring? Also, my lamps are sealed beams. I'm thinking the Bosch or Hella are not - so I'm basically converting to HID's?
Some of those headlights and all the things needed to install them cost as much as another station wagon. I just upgraded my truck lites to the brighter white push in bulbs. On the old cars I swithced to halogens. Been driving since 1956 and haven't had any major problems yet. Anything's better than my Model T headlights were. What's not perfect about those headlights Tedy? Look great from this angle. I even used dual rectangular Monte Carlo lights in my old motorhome that had the round 7" lights.
Marshall: The Bosch and Hella lamps are not sealed beam. They are also NOT HID lamps, as they are TERRIBLE in my experience. What I did was to replace the H-4 that the Hella came with, and put in PIIA ultra white H-3. That does require a minor change in the wiring. When I used the Bosch, they came with H-3 bulbs, and an adapter to plug into the factory harness. The HELLA lamps came with the H-4 that does just plug right in. To convert to the H-3 there is a separate wiring harness that took 5 minutes to install, and the lamps draw directly from the battery. The harness is controlled by relays that are tripped by plugging into the factory harness, no cutting needed. I was really impressed by the ease of installation, and by the quality of the lights. I was MORE than impressed by the light the give, and there was no spill, so they did not blind oncoming traffic. Both lamps, the better bulbs, and the wiring harness came to about $300 including 13% sales tax here.
Old school cibie headlights are better with 80/100 watt low beams and 100 watt high beams! relays of course but they have a great cut off and when aimed properly no bleai .
Are HID lamps those horrid blue things that blind the oncoming drivers (at least us over 50 types)?... Hate them. mike
Yeah they are Mike and I agree they suck, especially when they are installed in lifted trucks and never adjusted.
I hate staring at those bright blue lites. But those super white ones are even worse. Can't believe they are legal. I remember when dual headlights were not legal. Other upgrades were not legal in most states. Now it seems airport or river barge headlights are okay on cars. Next will come those old airplane spotter lights on jacked up pick up trucks. Down here the fad is jacked up pick up trucks with the nose raised another foot with the headlights aimed down toward the road. I try not to drive after dark except out on the interstate.
Cat, I PROMISE you that my ultra-whites would not blind you. The night I put them in, I was at work, and I had several of the drivers check and make sure, and the unanimous opinion was they were the least glarey lights they had seen in years. GN, you are right, too, the old CIBEE lights have that same European light pattern. It is wonderful. But there is nothing like those PIIA bulbs, and at $50 a pair, they are not bad for price.
I hate them too. (my eyes are also over 50 too) I also can not stand the brake lights on the new Audi's. They friggin' blind me.
You've got CAT EYES. I had to remove the half moons from my haligon headlites. They interferred with the focus. No not Ford Focus! Actually i don't have any problems with most headlights. I've learned to look to the right if they are too bright. Or just close my eyes till they pass. MikeT come on down and let's give your headlites the Cat test.
