Biltmore Theater. Looking east down 5th Street and the demolition of
    the Theater in 1964.
Just another one of Los Angeles landmark building that made way for the sake of progress.

    RE: #9359 - Ernie Kovacs crash/death...

I remember this event very well.

I remember thinking at the time, "Why was such a big star driving a Corvair?" Don't think I caught the fact that he was driving his wife's car... Of course, then why is the big star's wife driving a Corvair?

This was still in the pre-seat belt era. Wet roads, narrow tires, 'iffy' handling, possibly impaired driver. Tragic. Ernie Kovacs was a funny guy.

RE: #9360 - Sepulveda Bl. tunnel under LAX.

I've traveled through this tunnel hundreds (maybe thousands - ?) of times over my lifetime, and so have most LA area residents. The 4 runways at LAX are all in a east/west configuration. Sepulveda Bl. is a major north/south traffic corridor, going all the way from the LA harbor area, north through the south bay into west Los Angeles, over the Santa Monica mountains and into the San Fernando valley. It also went right through an area where they needed to extend the first 2 airport runways to the west. The solution was to put the tunnel under the runways.

As to the Boing Stratocruiser: I very clearly remember as a young boy watching film of a Pan American Stratocruiser ditching in the Pacific Ocean on October 16, 1956, halfway between Hawaii and San Francisco, it's actual destination. During the flight, one outboard engine developed trouble, so they had to shut it off. The extra drag then caused the other outboard engine to fail. Unable to keep a proper altitude, the plane circled over the Coast Guard cutter Pontchartrain, using up its fuel before making the water landing in the early dawn hours. Everybody made it OK.

This is the intersection of Cahuenga & Yucca Street Hollywood, Ca.
showing the Halifax Apartment Hotel and the famous Capitol Records
Building in the 1950s. There's even 3 Gas Stations at this intersection,
Atlantic Richfield, Mobil and 76 Union.

View of the old Plaza Church from Fort Moore Hill, 1960. Actually,
if you look at the extreme lower edge of the image you can see it
is taken from Hill Street or at least from the ivy-covered slope
below Hill Street which is, technically speaking, the last vestige
    of Fort Moore Hill. 1960

The Pan Am ditching is an interesting (and somewhat forgotten) story, probably made maybe a bit less 'newsworthy' over the years because everyone made it through alive. There's film of the ditching as well, taken by a Coast Guardsman on the Ponchartrain.

I never knew of this until you mentioned it, KK. IMO the calm looking sea had to be a major factor in the lack of lost life. It is pretty amazing.....

1949 Pontiac station wagon in Rupert, Idaho.
A Rupert, Idaho Mailman pulls out in front of
the wagon and the wagon ends up hitting a
    fence post. c.1953
The mailman was trying to make one last
special delivery, which is defined by the
USPS in short as a special service which
    provides preferential handling in transportation
    and expedited delivery.
I would say he handled this special delivery
with transportation in a expeditious manner.
