top of wagon I went to the automotive paint supply store and they told me to use a product called RUST-MORT , it says to apply to rusted area let set for 24 hours then rinse with water, then topcoat or prime, they also sold me the ppg primer that is #jp202 2k primer surfacer that is what the label on the can says(and man was that stuff high) 40 dollars a quart. My main thing is stopping the rust so it will not come back later after the paint is on.
......and yes I will be removing the trim to fix anything that is hiding under there so it will not come back to haunt me later
working on townsman I began removing the trim this morning.....worked 2 and a half hours.....took my time because the trim will be herd too find if I mess it up, looks pretty good under trim.....I think its going to be a pain too get it all back on after paint, those little clips don't hold up to 22 years of setting.I am going to try to start the prep work on the top , I will post some pics when done. I started this thread as a NEED VIN HELP post and it lead into other things so you that want to keep up with my progress I will be posting this for now on in the restoration section.
Tedy: I was NOT suggestion he put a vinyl top on. What I suggested was the paint on finish that mimics a vinyl top. It will hide very minor imperfections that otherwise are going to be a major PITA to get rid of. I agree, media or soda blasting, done very carefully, is the sure fire way to get rid of the rust and keep it from returning. That will leave a very rough surface, though, because of the pitting. I agree, a vinyl top is nothing but a rust factory. I hate the things.
