NO! Please sell it! .... of course just MY thoughts.. but what a shame that would be. In my most humble opinion.. and yes, it's just my opinion but YOUR car.. It should be hot-rodded ol' school. Update the current motor with whatever period hot rod parts could be scrounged.. wide whites and call it good. But my opinion will go over like when I tell my wife something.. yes, she is Mrs. Right.. first name "ALWAYS"... LOL. Oh well.. whatever you do.. it'll be sweet I'm .. sniffle... sure.
Another vote for PLEASE SELL IT OR KEEP IT ORIGINAL. Yes, we all agree it's your car to do with whatever your heart desires. But---BUT---BUTT! There are very few original old cars left. And I'm sure not many of these. Think about it before you change anything. The suspension and engine should be fine for many years with minor work. Even the hubcaps are there. The only question I had was is the original air cleaner still there? That's the only item I saw missing. I just passed on a late model Suburban with many high dollar additions. Everything made it look nice except those large wheels with garden hose tires. That car is crying for new wide white wall tires and the stock hub caps. I don't need it, can't afford it, don't have room for it. But I'll give you $10,000 site unseen for it. Let me know and we will be there.
I do have the breather and the orignal carb. I just installed the carb lastnight and dropped the tank. Lucky enough it was almost full of fuel which most likely saved it from rust but is full of varnish from the old gas. The only thing I know for sure that is missing is the passanger wiper blade. It also has not mirrors but it has no holes where the mirrors were removed so I can't say if they are missing or not. LOL PM sent
Cars back then often didn't have outside mirrors. There wasn't much behind to worry about. And if you notice most, the rear fenders got dented a lot when backing. Probably give the tank and carb a good cleaning, change oil, and start it up. Looks like someone already hooked up a separate key switch. PS I'm still thinking!
The guy I bought it from installed a carb and set a one gallon tank under the hood and drove it around his neighborhood. He also already rebuilt the original carb. He was also the one that replaced the ignition switch, coil, plugs, battery, and hoses. I am going to fire the car off tonight. I was also under the car last night and there is only light surface rust.
Think no more....some good muffler bearings and you'll get 35 MPG, up hill both ways while driving n the desert while a blizzard is happening!......don't forget to wave at me while your driving by
Sure would be a shame not to restore the original equipment on such a beautiful classic. Sadly I haven't the cash. mike
A 38,000 mile original in that shape? It would be a crying shame to destroy it, and that is what hot rodding would do to it. Your car, of course, but I would hope somebody who LOVES old Mopars would treasure it as is, even unrestored. They are only original once, after all, and these DeSotos are not that common. When it is a rarity like that, it is nice to see work done to improve drivability but that does not ruin the car should anyone want to put it back to original. In my very humble opinion, too, a Mopar needs Mopar power. I always wondered how it would work to put the Imperial straight 8 into one of these DeSoto sedans. That would certainly be different! Best of all, all Mopar, and all the right era. Cat, I would LOVE to see you with this in the driveway. It would be grand to see you behind the wheel on a nice evening!
I was looking around CL this evening and came across your De Soto, guess you are selling it. My dad and I had a original '40 Chevy Business coupe a few years back and we did the same because it was too Original to cut up so we figured someone would enjoy it as is...anyway good luck with your sale, it's a great car!
Geeze, Tman...post up the link to that car! If it's for sale I'm sure a member or lurker here would love to have it! Trust me...give me more time and energy and I would snap it up in a heartbeat! Show us where that CL link!
Oh yeah, I can do that...now! After 2 years of you and KK trying to show me how to post the link I finally can...can't tell me I ain't hot stuff on a stick! http://mobile.craigslist.org/cto/3747273171.html
those used cars sorry, pre-owned vehicles, all come with at least one detrimental aspect. And, with what I've seen on those TV car shows, bad floor boards are "easy fixes". What with those catalogs you can order stuff out of. You could probably get more floor boards delivered to your door. Personally, since I'm not very rich, I'd probably have to cut out some plywood to put down on what's left of that floor and hope for the best. Other than a few piecesof trim missing, the outside looked pretty good.
Way to go, Tman!! Hey, I'm proud of ya! Well...since Cat offered him $10K for the car I guess he figures he can get $15K. We shall see.
