So I think I may have found a '64 Ford Galaxie Country Squire. The good news is that it's in Canada - no customs issues to deal with. The bad news is that it's in Canada - Langley, BC, to be precise. And it's a non-runner. And this is the Winter From Hell, if that makes any sense. A bit of a contradiction. I read JMT's post about auto shippers in the U.S.: http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23843 Anyone know of a reliable (and cheap) way of shipping a car from Vancouver to Ottawa? I've got quotes from L. Hansen's, Performance Auto Carriers and Mackie Auto Transport, and they're not cheap. It might be cheaper to move to Vancouver - at least the weather's better!
I wonder if Rev can help you with this??? It might not hurt to send him a PM. Please don't move until you talk to him.
Hey Jim. Good Luck bringing a car all the way from Vancouver. Next time don't be afraid to bring one up from the States. I'm in Brockville and I've brought up 3 1/2 so far with no problems. Two Cadi's, Chevy wagon and a MGA chassis. Just have them dropped at Ogdensburg NY then bring them home with a tow dolly or trailer. With a car over 25 years old or more the customs is not a problem, they will charge you the tax. On the US side they need the title for three days before you attempt to bring it over to check for liens. Maybe you could try CN or CP rail.
Yeah, it's hard enouph keeping up with Rev's hording (trying too)...let alone to have extra compitition! Sorry but as for shipping, you mention "cheap"....think about it and all the other coments about it......watch "shipping Wars"..... going for the lowest price is just not the way to go....just my 2-bits of nothing. EDIT>>>> you scored a wagon in Vancouver ..... from under the Rev?????? Oh man, the thunder storms over your house will last for YEARS!......even I don't have brass ones like that!
Being a non-runner likely means that the railways won't be able to help you much. Cars are driven on and off the rail cars. Your cheapest method is to have a good heavy duty pick up and a car trailer. Drive to Vancouver, and then tow it home yourself. Think of it as a good road trip! Either that or arrange an engine there, and drive it home after you fly out!
Just the gas would probably cost more than the shipper to drive there and back. Non-ops are a pain, most shippers don't want anything to do with them and if they do you pay a premium for it. That's a long way, rail would be the best option, would it take a lot to get the car running and stopping just enough to ship it? It may cost a lot less to have somebody get the car running first than the extra you're going to pay the shipper to handle it not running.
Thanks guys for some of the suggestions! I'd consider driving to Van myself and towing it back if this wasn't the Winter From Hell. I'd probably end up being one of the stories you hear about on the news. ("Ontario Man Found Frozen in Manitoba Blizzard, Trusted GPS Too Much"). I'll check out some of the other shippers I found in "Old Autos". But I suspect this would be too far for most of them.
You need a GPS for this trip??? When you leave Ottawa you'll find this .... It's pritty eazy....it's only 1 road, a really long one! So, by the sound of your other thread....did you Buy this wagon? If so, congrats and when can we see a pic?
Yeah Tedy, but I just put the truck on cruise control :icon_drive: for long drives and just listen to the GPS. It's soooo ... relaxing .... not having to ... pay attention ... to road signs ... zzzzzzz ....
Jim...sent ya a pm....if you need me to look at...i could probably find some time as for shipping...the fact that its a non runner will cause you grief....the trains the cheapest way...but they wont touch non runners....everything else is mooie money
