    Nice one!

'77 Had the 460 for the full-sizes, but not so sure about the midsize LTD II. Not an expert, so I can't say.

Super wagon. I always liked the LTD II. They looked so modern to me as a kid when they were released. The two door especially had nice proportions. It's great they made a wagon and the Ranchero based on it. I remembered reading about their being pretty big for a mid size and sure enough, I just checked the Wiki entry on them and it stated they were the "largest car ever marketed as a mid size." I can see why they would be considered "eligible" for the 460 by car folks.

    OK, here goes, 'Fox:

Mid 60's, you had small (Falcon), medium (Fairlane) large ('big' Ford - Ranch wagon, Country Sedan, Country Squire)

Late 60's the Falcon wagon got the bigger Fairlane platform, so small and medium were basically the same size. Torino name also started to be used on the medium platform.

Mid 70's you now had the Pinto representing the small wagon. The Granada and Monarch came out in '75 as mid-sizers, but no wagons for them yet. Torinos were the mediums (but pretty big 'mediums'), and IIRC, you could also now get the 460 in them (at least for a while).

The Torino platform changed names to 'LTDII' in '77.
Fox platform came out in '78 (Fairmont / Zephyr). Some people called it 'small', but I would have called it a small medium-sized wagon. Ford was also still selling the LTDII, but there were no more wagons on that platform after '77. (This is also when the FIRST Cougar wagon was run - '77 when Mercury renamed their Montego line to 'Cougar' - so the '77 Cougar wagon was a one-year only deal, until the Fox Cougar wagon came out in '82. The LTDII body-on-frame platform was sold through '79 (but no wagons after '77).

In '82, Ford brought out the Granada and Cougar wagons when they were re-done on the Fox platform (still building Fairmonts and Zephyrs as well)

In '84, the Granada and Cougar Fox bodies were restyled and renamed 'LTDII (again) and Marquis. Fairmont and Zephyr were dropped. Oh, forgot to add - the Escort / Lynx front drivers came out somewhere around this time, so they took over the 'small' spot.

All this time of course, you still had the 'big' Ford wagons......

In '86, the Taurus and Sable came out, and I think you can take it from there.

    Thanks everyone!

    Immediate plans:

    - It's got a hesitation when you first press the accelerator (whether at a standstill or moving). Need to diagnose and fix. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
    - Front end has some squeeks and rattles that need attention. Might also remove half a coil while I'm doing front end work just to level it out a little.

    Short term plans:

    - Fix back window. It doesn't work. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated.
    - Dual exhaust.
    - Wheels/tires.

    Long term:

    - Restore exterior (paint & woodgrain).
    - Maybe drop a 460 in it. Not sure how much I wanna deviate from original, since it's in such good original condition.

Good question! I will be de-modding the Magnum to help fund the Squire. There are some high dollar mods that I can do without. But, it will remain my DD.

    Here's how it goes:

The 72 -76 midsized were the Torino and Montego. They were available with the largest of the Ford engines, both the 429 and 460 depending on the year. 77 - 79, the body was restyled and became the LTD II, Thuinderbird and Cougar. These were available with the 302, 351M, 351W and 400 for 77 and 78, but the 400 was discontinued for 79.

The full-sized models were the LTD and Marquis. They were available with the big engine right the way through77, again depending on year whether it was the 429 or 460. For 78, the 460 was discontinued in cars, but did continue to be available in the trucks.

As an aside, the late 80s 351W had more horsepower and torque than the mid-70s 460, although the torque peak was slightly higher in the revs, at 2200 instead of about 1800 for the 460. It is possible to get incredible fuel economy using the 351 and the AOD in any of these cars, just by using all that torque.

Small correction: The Fox-based models from 1983-1986 were called LTD and Marquis (The LTD II name was not resurrected) (although, strangely enough, I believe that the Fairmont still existed in 1983, alongside the LTD...both Fox-based cars). Additionally, as Marshall pointed out, the Taurus/Sable came out in 1986 to replace the LTD/Marquis...and, as with the LTD/Fairmont overlap in 1983, the Taurus/Sable also sat on the same dealership lot with the cars they were replacing in 1986. How odd that Ford would put their old version on the same lot with their replacement model during the same model year...twice in a few years' time.

Prior to 1983, the Panther-based (fullsize) cars were called LTD and Marquis, with their upscale versions called LTD Crown Victoria and Marquis Brougham/Grand Marquis. When the LTD and Marquis were built on the Fox-body, beginning in 1983, the fullsize, Panther-based models changed their official names to the names to LTD Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis (even on their base models)...in an attempt to avoid confusion (didn't work) with the Fox-based cars.

I was confused because I thought Ford went directly from the full size to the Fairmont size. I didn't even know about that intermediate stacked headlight size. Well, at my young age I'm just learning about cars.:D Especially the Ford names around the late 70's & early 80's!
    Thanks for all the info!
