What wagon is the ultimate wagon to you?

I am fairly new to this board and perhaps this question has been asked before - but if there is ONE station wagon make, model, trim line and colour combination ( inside and outside ) that is your favorite - if you had the spare cash to go out and knew where that exact car is - what would it be? This isn't a trick question.. just a question that if I were asked that, I would have to say that for me, it would be a 1959 Chevrolet Nomad ( 4 door Impala series 6 passenger ) in Crown Sapphire and Snowcrest White with an aqua interior - 348, 4 bbl, Powergide transmission with factory in dash air conditioning ( NOT the dealer add on A/C unit ), power windows, power seat, Wonderbar radio and Level Air suspension. . In a perfect world, it would be a 9 passenger wagon with the third seat facing aft in what GM called "the Lookout Lounge". Ah, but they had imagination back then, didn't they? However, only the Kingswood wagon ( Bel Air trim level ) was available as a nine passenger and all Kingswoods had the third seat. Here's something close to what I would ask Santa for and want to receive for Christmas ...





The above car apears to be a lighter shade than Crown Sapphire which was a very pretty blue colour. But this will give you the right idea... So what would your first choice be?

Tough question!

I do agree that the GM full sized wagons for 1959 are the ultimate in flash. Perhaps only equalled by the 1961 Chrysler wagons with their huge tailfins and canted headlights. The 1961 Plymouth wagons also had a look that would turn heads (and some stomachs) LOL. But I love them.

But I also love the big seventies monster wagons. Those GM clamshell wagons and the final huge Chrysler Town and Countrys. The ultimate clamshell? An Olds Custom Cruiser with every option. Throw in a 1974 Town and Country and a 1977 Mercury Colony Park.

 

Yeah, that's a toughie. I agree on the Mopar wagons, but I'd go as far back as the 1955 to 1958 New Yorker Wagons with those nice big brutish gas-guzzling Hemis. Gas was 36 cents a Canadian Gallon back then, and the gastanks were HUGE! And the bumpers took 2 men and a boy to remove.

Then I'd have to include the early 50's Buick Roadmaster Woodie wagons with the straight 8's. Style, all style.

And Fairmont/Zephyr/Cougar Wagons from 1978 to 1982. So easy to work on, comfy, cheap to run, and responsive. I'll probably restore one or two more before they throw my ashes somewhere. I want to make good ash hard to find.

-1940 Ford Woody - built as a surf wagon, of course! Tan.

-1940 Hudson Super Six woody - there are only three known to exist!
-1969 Olds Vista Cruiser - you can watch the air races AND the submarine races with these!
-1990 Buick Roadmaster - with the LT1 V-8, obviously! In dark green or black
-1967 GMC Suburban - I had a beautiful one and let it go (sniff!)
-1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer - cream white, woodgrain, leather, 360, oooh, baby!
-1949 Jeep wagon - 4x4, small, agile, a bit slow, but lotsafun! In blue, please.
-1963 Studebaker Daytona Wagoneer, sliding roof and all! Dark blue with tan interior.

My first two cars were '52 Plymouths - a Cranbrook and a Cambridge - both four-doors.

Old Mopar - Nice wagon!!!! What a peach! No doubt you get a lot of comments as it is a rare thing to see a car like her - especially as pure and stock as she looks! Say what you like but a car doesn't have to be a fully optioned and decked out luxury liner or a '57 Chevy or a Mustang or a GTO to be enjoyed and appreciated. I have a real soft spot for the orphans - the forgotten ones that everyone threw away because they were "just a wagon" or "just an old four door".
A friend of mine hauls cars in for recycling and he hauled in recently a '68 Meteor Rideau 10 passenger wagon sitting in his yard right now that needs to be saved. Would you believe that the woman who gave him the car to haul away learned to drive in that car when it was brand new? It's a real project but it should be saved. It's unusual not only in that it is a Meteor ( it is one of 544 Meteor Rideau 10 passenger wagons built in '68 ) but also, it only has a 302 in it. Most Meteors were 390 powered because they were a big car.
For those who don't know what a Meteor is, it was a model built exclusively for sale in Canada and a few were exported over seas. It is basically a full sized Mercury mechanically and as far as sheet metal and glass goes. The differences are in the badging of the car, some experterior trim items and the interior which is basically identical to a full sized Ford car of the same year. The Meteor Montcalm had Ford Custom interior upholstery, the Rideau had Galaxie upholstery and in '68, the LeMoyne ( top of the line ) had LTD upholstery. "Upholstery" refers to door panels and dash trim - in fact, the entire dash board is that of a Ford and not a Mercury. Aside from the luxurious LeMoyne, to the best of my knowledge, all Meteors shared the same seat fabrics and designs as their same trim line Ford cousins.

The wagon that I am talking about has been spared temporarily because scrap prices have taken a nose dive so if I can thin my own collection down enough over the next few weeks, I'll likely buy it and have it towed home. I'll try to get some pictures of it in the next few days and post them along with photos of some of our other projects. Your thoughts and input are most welcome.

 

Essentially, I like just about every American wagon built in the 1970's and 1980's (even the Chrysler K-cars and their derivatives). These are the ones that really catch my eye, though...

1981 Pontiac LeMans Safari
1982-1983 Pontiac Bonneville Safari
1982-1983 Chevrolet Malibu Estate
(any of the above fully loaded and with the 5.7L diesel, if available)
