Ok, there should be a switch in one of the heater hoses by the firewall on the passenger side. If the lever doesn't work on the dash one of 2 things happened, the cable snapped or the valve is stuck. Try manually moving the valve, if that doesn't work, you can try and get a replacement but I don't know if theyre available and if so, from where. Or for now you can just loop the 2 heater hoses back into eachother bypassing the heater core. Just pick up a fitting from lowes or home depot to connect the 2 ends.

Thanks! I found the valve you are talking about and the lever on the switch seems to move the valve so the cable is working, but still I get heat... so I'm guessing the valve is bad and it appears Autozone has it for $49 but I'd like to be sure it's bad before I buy it... I will try and remove it this weekend and see if I can see the mechanism move inside while pushing the lever. Seems to me like a simple plumbing type shutoff valve so maybe it's just needs some good old fashioned cleaning if it's not actually broken inside and stuck in the open position.

Thats it! Idk, I'd definitely check it. All it does is open flow through the heater core or bypass it, not much in there to go wrong. If it moves (internally too) and you're still getting heat, I do not know what is wrong.

If the valve is moving, but you still have heat, you will be better off changing it anyway. It means the seals are leaking.

I think the valve may be working but my switch has been mangled... and I think the cable may have been replaced previously and may not have been adjusted properly. To test, I disconnected the cable from the valve and pulled the balve all the way up (which seems to be the direction the valve goes when you slide the lever to cool. I think this did the trick, I took a short ride and the air was pretty cool... more like what the normal vent would feel like with external temperature. I will try to adjust the cable tomorrow in the cold position.

I had the same cable issue, since my car has become a very fair weather driver I just moved the valve to cold and have left it. I was lucky the valve still moved easily. If I happen to drive when it's cold I just move the lever, did have to mark it H and C however.

I jumped the A/C wire and the compressor clutch spun freely and no sounds or anything... so I'll now try and get hold of some hoses and gauges and see how much refrigerant is in the system... good news so far though!

That's exactly what I'm doing right now... I need to find time and pull out the entire instrument cluster at some point and at that point I'll see about the HVAC Switch too...

Thanks! The heat is now off! I just pulled the cable off the heater control valve for now and pulled it all the in the cold position. I think there is a problem on the switch side where the cable mounts... but I'm procrastinating getting under that dash :) but there is no shortage of projects on this car.

You sure cleaned up that engine bay and overall the car looks to be in pretty decent original condition. Unless you plan a full resto, then I'd just leave it as is beside going back to blue on the valve covers.

Thanks! the more I do to it, the less I want to do to it... if that makes sense. The more we clean, the more we like the originality of it. If I can get a perfect match for the paint, I might not even repaint the whole thing. But that is proving to be a very difficult task.

So far, the only changes from original are , valve cover repaint, wheels/tires and flowmaster dual exhaust. All these are simple to revert back if we ever want to. The rest of the car will most likely stay true to original and the interior will just get cleaner cleaner over time but hopefully will not need any major replacement for while. I need to post some interior pics. I'll do that this week.
