Hi There, Just signed up! Own a 1960 Pontiac Strato Chief Safari. I've had it for about8 years and just drove it on a regular basis this year, It has some bugs to work out. I found it beside a farmhouse and bought it for $400. Added a battery and some fresh gas and it Ran! It had been parked for 15 years. Haven't done a lot too it, bodywise(sprayed it flat black) but mechanically, the brakes and suspension have been done, including cutting 1 1/2 coils off the springs. Well, Thats bout it for now, I'll post more later. Ken
daaaam....another Canuk????................. Hey Ken...in that 1 pic?....does it have old school pan wires on it??? I thought i was the only one silly enuff to do that........ ...nice sled!
Wires They are "Luxor" wires that a neighbor sold me. Said he had em on a lowrider years ago. Saw me working on the car one day and told me to come down to his garage and buy em before he had his garage sale. Picked them up, (with tires) for $200
Always wanted a set of wire wheels. We had a sedan model years ago (early 70's). Heck of a car! Did you know the US models had wider rearends back then too?
Yeah, the original rims were 14" and from the back the car looked like it was sittin on a skateboard. I put 15" off a 79 Caprice and they fill the wheelwells better. The wires are negative offset? or is it positive?, anyways, they're deep.
Thanks for the Welcome Guys, its nice to have somewhere to go and talk "long-roofs" Most of my friends think I'm sorta looney for wanting these old wagons, but I've always liked them. One of my buddies (hes out of town right now) owns a 1960 Nomad wagon, with a factory 348/auto. I'll try and get him to join as well.
Are you running the 283 V8 or the I6? A lot of guys in the US think we got the US Poncho engines. The 283 was no slouch though and LOTS of potential (with a few goodies, of course.)
Originally a 6 Mine was originally a 6, but was changesd long before I got it, its now a 350, we think. When I got it the block was orange and the heads and intake were blue, a couple guys have guessed its a 327, but I haven't checked the numbers yet. I painted it orange and drive it..LOL
I just got mine done this summer, but too busy doing renos to drive it or fix a few bugs in the electrical system (my fault because I merged the harnesses from the 1978 donor with my 1979 - rear defrost, clock and cruise from the 1978 with my AC and rear wiper options, plus mine had a points ignition (Mexico was slow using Electronic Ignition) and the new Six was Electronic). Anyway, the point is I wanted to tour the Prairie backroads and dig up an old real woodie for the next project, but if I spot any cars of interest, I'll post pics and contacts, before the crushers get them. We didn't use roadsalt here until the mid-sixties, so a lot of them would still be sound.
the wires are whats referred to as "full reverse"...(positive offset) cool look...at least i think so.. ...again
