So I've received nothing but negative remarks because I let my children have a pet snake. It's a tiny harmless ringneck snake and is very easy maintenance. We have it in a very nice reptile aquarium and the kids enjoy watching it slither around. It's just another addition to our love for creatures. We have horses, dogs, a cat, a fish, and now Goldie the snake.
You're crazy! Just kiddinnnnng! I think the more things that kids can experience from our world the better. They will have questions about each animal, look them up and learn so much about the planet just from the lives and habitats of different animals. What's crazy about that?
Snakes are cooll but alot of people are scared to death of them. When my son was in junior high he started raising snakes. We kept them in the living room and you wouldn't belive how many people wouldn't even go in that room. Of course he had 15 or 16 large pythons and boas. He's 25 now and has turned his snake breeding hobby into a nice little side business. His house now has a living room full of snakes!
Cool! Wish my Mom would let me have a snake.... every time I find a Garter snake, I get locked out of the house
No arguments here I don't mind snakes...not sure I'd keep one for a pet. But that doesn't mean I think you shouldn't. When my kids were small we used to have alot of pets but just the usual kind. At the height of our petting years we had 3 cats, 2 dogs, 2 gerbils and 2 siamese fighting fish(in seperate bowls) and a parakeet...come to thing of it there was alot of poop around my house.
Here's some snake pictures I have. First one is a Red Racer I caught at home or AKA "Coachwhip" Due to how much it looks like a rope. And yes that's me holding it. Next snake is a Diamondback Rattlesnake that was nesting in the engine bay of a car I bought in Casa Grande AZ. On the ride home he shook out of the engine compartment and was laying on the deck of the trailer. The last picture is another Red Racer that I caught in the parts room at work.
I'm one of those people who doesn't particularly care what anyone else thinks - they are your kids, you are a responsible parent, it is natural for kids to want to learn about various creatures we share the earth with. There are those though who are so afraid of everything and think their way is the only way and anyone who does anything different is out of line. If this were me I'd be quick to point out how surprised I am that they have not taken the time to teach their children all they can about the creatures we live with and how sad for them and their children that they have not yet done so. I'd even be offering to help them get started . I guess we know where the fish will be going when it croaks don't we?
I have been trying to convince my wife...for 30 years!....that we should get a pet snake. She thinks I am crazy! I am also pulling for a pet iguana....
