Got an inspection assignment today to look at a '97 Buick Le Sabre sedan at a local shop. Details said it had damage down both sides as well as the trunk lid - 'possible total loss' ('ya think?) Anyway, I look at the owner's name and it sounded sort of familiar....... Checked my list of old estimates in my estimating software and found the same name. Hmmm..... Turns out I had done another inspection for this same guy back in November, 2010 - on a '97 Buick Le Sabre. I totaled out that one. Did this guy fix it and now he's totaled it again? Nope. Turns out he just bought another '97 Le Sabre after I totaled the first one. He even brought the trunk lid off of the first one to the body shop so they could fix the second. I went and looked at it. It's a total. It's got 244k on the odometer.
I am a fan of the 97-99 LeSabres. I can understand why he'd want another one. The newer ones just look funny.
I have a buddy who constantly buys LeSabres and runs them into the ground. He says that they'll take anything. He ran his first one without oil for 3 weeks, and then the TRANNY went lol!
Right here is proof why GM should have continued production of the 3800 engine. If they don't have any offerings with that engine you can't sell a lot of sedate cars. Even the LaCrosse had the 3800 standard in the first year or two, Olds Intrigues could have them early on, and I just don't want to trust that "High Feature" 3.6L engine. Also, they should have used it in the 97-05 minivans in place of the 3400. Thankfully at least in Impalas it was the optional engine.
I can honestly say, as a V8 guy, I have never heard as many sparkling reviews for an engine as I have for the 3.8.
Yup...the 3800 is one of the best V6 engines ever built. I don't know why car companies discontinue good things but they always do.
I believe you are right. Nothing is made to last now. Back years ago cars, toasters, refridgerators, even light bulbs, were made to last. I think cars and parts are pre calculated to expire at a certain date or mileage. I just read how CEO's are making millions for the great work they do for their underpaid employees while those employees receive less and less in benefits.
Then we can play cowboys and Indians and shoot real capshooters and bee bee guns. Ride our bikes down the middle of the street and eat candy that's not sealed in seven layers of protective plastic. And talk to strangers on the school playground without worry.
Can't fit all of us who want to escape to the past in a Delorean. We need something more time period correct. A statiow wagon! I call the way back!
