Okay, I was looking at this photo and thinking this is likely somewhere in northern, Virginia in about 1962. Virginia had black plates with white letters in even years and white plates with black letters in odd years. Since there are at least a couple of '61 models in the photo, I figured 1962. The apartments and the shopping center look very much like the architecture that still exists in older parts of Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia.
But then, I looked at the 60 Ford wagon, and something about the trim makes it look like a Canadian Meteor to me. Then I took a closer look at the two 60 Pontiacs. They aren't "wide track" models, indicating they are likely built on the Chevrolet frame as was done for the Canadian Pontiacs in those years.
Is this some place in Canada?

Good eye, Jim. I think you're right. I'm also puzzled by that little red car next to the Ford wagon. At first I thought it might be a NSU (Prinz?), but can't match it on google images.

The black % white plates are from Ontario. The salmon % white Pontiac is a Laurentian model which is the mid priced model. My dad had a Strato Chief same colour and year

The red car is a VW 1500, which is a sedan version of the better known VW Squareback wagon. The sedan was later replaced with a fastback model.

I don't think that's a VW 1500. Body shape seems a bit off to me, particularly the rear greenhouse. Also the front parklamps are wrong for a 1500...

This white VW is really nice looking. All I remember is this style, the square back and the fast back.
