The famous GM clamshell tailgate wagons (71-76) I know came from Buick (Estate Wagon), Oldsmobile (Custom Cruiser) Pontiac (Safari Wagon) and Chevrolet (Kingswood).... never knew Cadillac had them as well:

Cadillac never made station wagons. Almost all Caddy "wagons" were modified by their owners paying a company to graft the back of a wagon onto the rear of their caddy sedan. The one posted above is no exception. The modification evidence is clearly visible. Or they swapped parts like the front clip from a Cadillac, and put them on an actual wagon, such as an Olds custom Cruiser.

But as I said, Cadillac has NEVER made a station wagon from the factory.

I agree, they are really nice cars, but still... they're all hack-jobs. I can spot the imperfections from a mile away.

hi, warwagon you are correct, a station wagon has never rolled out of cadillac assembly plants, they were special ordered and were made at outside plants, just like the s10 blazer extreme's and yenko's and mid 80's camaro convertibles...

But they left the factory as cadillac sedans.... NOT the commercial chassis that ambulances and hearses were made from, and also NONE, that i am aware of, left the factory as an olds, buick, etc, and was converted to a cadillac....

to clarify, my 69 is said to be one of 14 made for 69, but probably hundreds of cadillac wagons were made throughout all the years from the early 50's through the 80's.

if an average of 14 were made each year from 1954 to 1985 thats 434 cadillac wagons of any year period..

when i take mine to cruises and shows i get people that come up and say stuff like "i've been into cars all my life, coming to shows and such since i was a boy, and i've NEVER seen one of these"

    its cool though :)

How would one order such a wagon? Did dealers send the car out to be converted or would people convert them after purchase?

people didnt buy a sedan and sent it out to the conversion place, my station wagon has the original title FROM the cadillac dealership where the guy paid over 9,000 (in 1969!!!) and the title says station wagon. so I believe that they, for the most part, were sold at the dealer, brand new, as a station wagon. also, warwgn, the term hackjob, sounds as if you're saying they're poorly done. it sounds like you have something against these particular wagons. Mine I can speak for and it has amazing craftsmanship.
