stuck engine?

    This may be a tired old subject, but I've exhausted the 'net trying to get an answer... this '67 Plymouth I just got, with a 440, has been setting for about 10 years. For a week now, I've been pouring Marvel's into the cylinders, just in case. Today, from the solenoid, I tried turning it over. Nothing but a bunch of clunks..after about 20 tries, it jumped about a half revolution, spitting some oil back out the spark plug holes. Then it wouldn't move again, just tiny little jerks on the vibration damper.
    Any input would surely help! Thanks in advance!

    PS I don't see any space to get a cheater bar & socket onto the crank, for manually trying...

    I just commented on your other post. If the Marvel Mystery Oil is not losening the rings you will have to pull the heads and check for other problems.
    Or let it set and soak awhile longer.
    Might be a good idea to also pull the pan and look things over. May as well get ready to do it right.

    You also might be able to turn the flywheel/flexplate with one of those 'tools', both ways, to get it started.

    Pour some down the carburetor so the valve stems will get some lubrication. If it turned a little today, let it rest for a couple of days, and try it again. Just don't burn up the starter trying, and if it cranks over, make sure to keep everything lubed so you don't score the cylinders. I would work it a little at a time. What year and type of engine?

    Junk - think that over - you'd have to FILL the valve pockets to get anything to the valve guides!!
    95% of the time, it's rust on the cylinder walls - just hope there's no 'mouse nests' in a cylinder!

    Almost sounds like it may have a half spun rod bearing too. Could have been it's original reason for being parked. Sometimes a bearing half flattens out until the heat from revolutions makes it seize again. I would agree with Cat and pull that pan.

    I have had this before. What I do is get a big breaker bar with the correct socket for the balancer bolt. Using this in the direction of the running motor I turn it over that way.
    You will save the starter and the rings will free themselves up. If you need more of a penetrate, you might try PB blaster or ATF. MMO is fine and if you get the motor spinning, she will start. My brother and I LOVE to find engines that have not run in years. We usually get them started in a day or so.

    If you have a Harbor Freight next to you it is a cheap tool.

    Thank you, Dave. I have a breaker bar like the one you linked, but getting it in there is next to impossible...I'll have to pull the radiator out.... I wanted a project, and I got one!
    You & your brother going to be in this neck of the woods soon? :)

    It's a '67 Plymouth. Engine is the 440. Takes up a lot of space under the hood. Thanks for the tip; I am worried about the starter teeth! Breaker bar is next...

    The whole glove box was a mouse nest, and the floor in front of rear seat! It was gross...

    Take lots of pictures. Make lots of notes. If it was easy everyone would have an old car or wagon!
    When you finally get it running, cleaned up, and someday finished, you will have something to be proud of and enjoy!
    Or just go buy a new mini van and join millions of others!(y)

    And no, I will NEVER own a minivan!

    Your buddy is right. I also said I'd never own a mini van. Almost traded my truck for an HHR panel this summer. ALMOST !:D
