Yeah, eventually I do think that would be best. Something with two speeds and maybe a delay option. But... there is something cool about doing it just like they did back when. And... got them working last night! That's right, working vacuum windshield wipers!
Also fixed the gas gauge by pulling the floor out of the cargo area and digging out the sending unit. Clean except for the sunken float.
So stuck a cork on the end of the arm for now and ordered a new float.
Slowly but surely I am bringing the ol'gal back to full life!

The lights problem could be a bad headlight switch. On alot of the ford there is a circuit braker in the headlight switch for the horn and lights.

Yeah, I read that in the book. Had the switch out a couple of times now. Put a circuit tester on all the polls (which seem to work) but have not figured out which one is for what. Book does not say either how to "reset" the circuit breaker, Or even if that possible? The fuse for the "interior" lights was replaced and still nothing.
Is a new switch the only answer?

    Thanks for the help guys.

Today I worked on a piece of rocker trim. Trying to pound out a few dents on the kitchen table ! Tracy was real cool about it and even laughed . Nice way to watch a NASCAR race.

I wrestled with control arm bolts today.
When I first rebuilt the suspension I had torqued down the controls arms while the suspension was hanging. Finally got some ramps and while able to do it while the weight was on the wheels. I'm hoping this will address a certain sproinginess the ride had... :bouncy:

    RE: Jarius' Dash Lights

Jarius, I had problems with the dash lights in my '58 . It was the rheostat at the front of the switch that dims them. If I remember right, the coiled resistance wire was bad.

The circuit breakers in the headlight switch reset themselves automatically.

Re-installed the tailgate trim panel on my Bonneville and replaced the temp gauge sending unit.

Now the gauge works, but it reads about 50 degrees low...DOH!

THAT is some NICE metal work there Tracy! Not easy working with stainless is it?

Dave, good to know about the circuit breakers but now I have one more thing to concern me, hmmmm
I will get a circuit tester on the rheostat... STAT!
But first I want to put in a new ignition switch.
You see, I went on a 4 day vacation to a quiet mountain lake the past few days. Though quiet contemplation and inner soul searching I spent some time studying the wiring diagrams (along with reading a great Stephen King book, "CELL") in the 1958 Ford repair manual. Much of my problems could ultimately stem from the fact that the previous owner/builder put in a series of switches to replace the original ignition switch. Things like turn signals are most-likely not even powered. Sooooo that will be tackled this weekend. If the dash lights do not get fixed with that repair, then a new light switch will be on the shopping list.

"Change one thing at a time" is what my Jr High School science teacher taught me.

-----------OMG Ford stuff in a Chevy. As long as what puts the pedal to the medal is still Chevy, it's a Chevy. My 1955 Chevy wagon has Thunderbird front bucket seats of unknown vintage. A 1987 Ford Escort third brake light. It worked fine and the wagon doesn't mind. Our 1948 Chevy panel truck has a Ford third brake light from a Tauras of forgotten year. But to make up for this I have a Chevy engine-tranny in our 1939 Ford coupe and 1941 Ford 2 door.:dancing:

Great ideas. We did our 1955 Chevy wagon back in 1987. Redid front rotors and calipers again few years ago. Will never drive even a hay wagon without duel master cylinder and all new hoses.

I'd like to be taking a road trip!
The weather has been awesome here, and I've been working on cars instead of driving them.

Spent the last two days swapping out a power steering rack.
At least now I won't dribbling...

I spent part of the evening working on adding a 3rd row seat. Figuring how I need to chop the seat to make it work. It looks like it will be pretty straight forward. Also working to change out the old rear wheels for the new ones. The fronts were put on yesterday which yielded a total 2.5" drop including all the suspension stuff.

I've been working all summer, getting the car roadworthy. Fixed the crazy gas tank... replaced the wiper motor... new headliner... new paint job... new windshield... many detail parts. I get many compliments now.
