Before you paint your Buick... Prime and block it 4 times to get out all ripples created when you took it down to bare metal. Unless you stripped it with chemical paint remover which it doesnt look like you did. Long strokes when sanding ... Keep up the great work!
Great work! Hi David, I only just found this thread Can't believe what an awesome job you're doing with your Buick. Restoring and customizing... just amazing. And inspiring! Wish I had the space and tools for tackling a project that thoroughly. Hope someday I will, so I can give my vehicles the attention they deserve, instead of just keeping them technically sound and fighting the everlasting fight against corrosion. As part of my initiation to the site I read the thread from start to finish, what an awesome looking wagon, keep up the great work. Many of the decisions that you have made reminds me of the work that Chip Foose does, very subtle yet something you could see on a production vehicle. All of the lines just flow together and it comes together as an absolutely beautiful car. can wait until it is finished. Cheers!
Many of us have watched David work his magic on this wagon. He accomplishes in a few days what it now takes me, at least, weeks or more to do, and those are just the simple things. There is no way I would undertake the massive project he has on his hands. And it sure is going to be a beauty when it is done. We are fortunate he is willing and able to share his efforts with us.
Yes, I totally agree! I mentioned the same thing to David once. To me personally, nothing is more distinguished (and just plain awesome) then a custom job that looks like it was designed and engineered like that in the first place.

The problem arises in the heat. The glass can become loose and can actually be pushed out by hand. A primer should be used before the urethane to assure a good bond and unlike the Butyl tape the urethane will allow you move the glass abit to get into the right place. Your car is looking really great you must be very excited to be this far along with your project. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well fannie, it's dinnertime, and I am about to chow down on a big, heapin' helpin' of CROW! I just removed the two rear curved side glass panels that I had installed months ago, because I didn't like how they were moving with the heat. The butyl tape allowed too much movement. I never liked the fit on the passenger side, and both windows required shimming. Not good. So, last week, I bought some wire, and cut the glass out. Yesterday and today, I reinstalled the glass, using urethane sealant. I wish I had listened to you and your husband back when you suggested urethane as a much better solution. My windshield is still mounted with butyl tape and sealed with urethane. It is perfect and I am happy with it. MMMMMM! CROW! And it is cooked to a delectible 108 degrees! David
Just was alerted by a dear friend to this thread. I applaud this entire project, as the owner of a '71 Boattail Riv, previous owner of a green '72 Olds Custom Cruiser and a like-minded purist dreamer who wondered what a "factory" hardtop clamshell would look like. And two door? Wow. This is awesome! So happy to see this inspired and loving work being carried out so Skillfully on this old girl. I mean, I am even happy to see one of these beauts saved from the demo derby... Now this? This is simply amazing. Congrats and keep up the great work!
No new pics. It still looks the same as it did back in April. It's kind of stuck in a holding pattern. I've been working on it every chance I get, but it's not really progress that shows at this point (especially when I have to redo things like reinstalling glass! ). David
These are the dog days of working on your car, David. It is times like this when I rely on my wife and car club buddies to keep me motivated, by asking what I got done and them actually being interested. Like we are with yours . What you have accomplished already is far more than I could ever have undertaken. WE are highly motivated - to see your finished car and continue to be amazed. We love any progress so even pics of the little things gets our heart a-pumping.
Very well said, Saf. It truly is incredible, what you're creating there Wix. It's a piece of art, it really is. I'm so inspired by your vision and your patience to get it done right, not just to get it done. Keep it up. It's going to be amazing.
